Weibo tipster “Mobile Tip Expert” flagged the presence of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875G on a leaked product roadmap. The upcoming flagship chip - with a G suffix indicating a gaming focus - will purportedly be built on Samsung’s 5nm process.

Weibo user “Mobile Tip Expert” shared what appears to be a leaked internal Qualcomm roadmap that highlights the existence of the Snapdragon 875G. Interestingly, the roadmap indicates that the Snapdragon 875G will be built on Samsung’s 5nm EUV process and not TSMC’s 5nm process that the vanilla Snapdragon 875 is expected to be fabbed on.

As of now, we know very little about the Snapdragon 875G apart from its name. Earlier rumours indicated that smartphone makers might have to pay substantially more for Qualcomm’s 5nm Snapdragon 875 than the current-gen Snapdragon 865. Qualcomm might possibly offer the Samsung 5nm Snapdragon 875G at price premium, offering better performance than the flagship Snapdragon 875 but at a higher price.

This could potentially create an interesting product segmentation scenario among Android 2021 phones. “Real” flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S21 and gaming smartphones like a hypothetical Xiaomi Black Shark 4 could leverage the high performance 875G silicon at a higher price point, while 2021 flagship killers could use the Snapdragon 875 to deliver great performance at more reasonable prices. We’ll have to wait to find out more.
