Windows Mixed Reality headsets haven’t taken off in a big way yet, but Samsung’s Odyssey headset is currently considered to be the best of the bunch. Although more expensive than the competition, the price premium is justified given the OLED display panels, the integrated headset, and overall build quality.
Samsung hasn’t given up on the MR space and looks set to launch a sequel to the Odyssey dubbed the Odyssey+. Given the naming scheme, we don’t expect it to be much more than an improved version of the original, rather than any radical redesign. However, if you are keenly awaiting it, the sequel has just received Bluetooth certification, hinting that it is not far from appearing on store shelves.
The new models have similar product numbers, XE800ZBA and XQ800ZBA. The addition of Bluetooth support suggests that Samsung could be adding a new controller or gamepad to the equation, which makes sense as this is the area of the VR/AR/MR market that has taken off. Although the Windows Mixed Reality platform is still nascent, support for Steam greatly adds to the appeal of these headsets.

I have been writing about consumer technology over the past ten years, previously with the former MacNN and Electronista, and now Notebookcheck since 2017. My first computer was an Apple ][c and this sparked a passion for Apple, but also technology in general. In the past decade, I’ve become increasingly platform agnostic and love to get my hands on and explore as much technology as I can get my hand on. Whether it is Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Nintendo, Xbox, or PlayStation, each has plenty to offer and has given me great joy exploring them all. I was drawn to writing about tech because I love learning about the latest devices and also sharing whatever insights my experience can bring to the site and its readership.
