Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 vs MediaTek Dimensity 8350
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3
► remove from comparison
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 (SM8635) is a high-end SoC (system-on-a-chip) that can be used in premium smartphones and tablets (mostly Android based).
In terms of performance, it is between Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and is based on ARM's v9.2 architecture.
The Kryo CPU consists of three clusters: the first consists of a prime core (Cortex X4) with up to 3 GHz, the second of four performance cores with up to 2.8 GHz (Cortex A720). The efficiency cluster consists of three power-saving units (Cortex A520) operating at up to 2 GHz. The SoC uses the integrated Qualcomm Adreno 735 iGPU for graphics acceleration.
Qualcomm's AI engine supports multimodal generative AI models, including LLM, LVM and ASR, and can process up to 10 trillion parameters directly on the SoC. Image manipulation should therefore be possible within fractions of a second. However, there are also drawbacks compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, as speculative decoding is not possible.
The integrated Snapdragon X70 modem enables a maximum download speed of 5 Gbit/s and an upload speed of up to 3.5 Gbit/s. The modem is also able to support all globally known 5G bands. Qualcomm's FastConnect 7800 is responsible for local communication, which also supports Bluetooth 5.4 with LE Audio and Wi-Fi 7.
The SoC is manufactured at TSMC using the 4 nm process.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3
► remove from comparison
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 is a fast mid-range SoC with 8 cores for smartphones and tablets (mainly Android-based). It was launched in November 2023 and is intended as the successor to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.
Qualcomm combines an ARM Cortex-A715 performance core with clock speeds of up to 2.63 GHz with three Cortex-A715 cores at 2.4 GHz and four economical Cortex-A510 efficiency cores at 1.8 GHz. An Adreno 720 is used as the GPU, which supports Vulkan 1.3 and Snapdragon Elite Gaming.
Specifically, Qualcomm claims a 15 percent improvement in processor performance and a 20 percent improvement in efficiency compared to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.
The integrated ISP can process photos from a 200 MP camera and 4K HDR videos. Qualcomm promises a particularly effective night mode, in which 30 photos are taken almost simultaneously and combined into a brighter image.
Qualcomm has also installed a Snapdragon X63 5G modem that achieves a download speed of up to 5 Gbit/s. The phone supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3.
The SoC is manufactured in the modern 4nm process at TSMC and should have very good energy efficiency.
MediaTek Dimensity 8350
► remove from comparison
The MediaTek Dimensity 8300 presented in Q4 2023 is an ARM-based SoC (system-on-a-chip) that is manufactured using the 4 nm process. It was specially designed for use in Android smartphones and is in the lower upper class in terms of performance. It supports all current mobile communication standards, including 5G SA. The only difference to the older Dimensity 8300 is the support for StarSpeed software.
The CPU works with a total of eight cores, which are divided into two clusters. The first cluster contains one ARM Cortex-A715 power core, which operates at up to 3.35 GHz. In addition, there are 3 further ARM Cortex-A715 cores with 3.2 GHz. The second cluster contains four ARM Cortex-A510 energy-saving cores with 2.2 GHz. LPDDR5 RAM can be used as RAM and UFS 4.0 is supported as internal memory.
In terms of connectivity, dual 5G with a theoretical peak download speed of up to 5.17 GBit/s is available, as well as WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
An Imagiq 980 image processor is responsible for processing the camera data. Video recordings are supported with up to 4K at 60 fps.
The integrated ARM Mali-G615 MC6 graphics unit can control displays with a resolution of up to 2,960 x 1,440 pixels (WQHD+) and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. With Full HD+, even up to 180 Hz is possible.
