Originally announced last year at the Roblox annual developer conference, the AI generative AI model called ‘Cube 3D’ has launched as an open-source creator tool. Cube allows creators to generate 3D objects using AI, which can then be tweaked and adjusted using Roblox Studio. It is currently available in beta, and there will be additional AI-based tools added to the platform in the coming months.
Roblox is essentially a virtual universe where people can create their own worlds, games, and share those experiences with friends. It already has a huge library of games and experiences that have been created by its users, some more interactive than others. Now, with Cube 3D, developer Roblox Corporation has given creators the freedom to generate 3D objects that can be used in these worlds and games.
The first tool included with Cube 3D is 'mesh', which essentially takes in text prompts to create a 3D model in the world of Roblox. “The generated object is fully compatible with game engines today and can be extended to make objects functional,” the official announcement states. As an example, the developers shared that creators could use text prompts like “/generate a motorcycle” or “/generate orange safety cone” and these would appear as mech versions within seconds. Then, using Roblox Studio, these can be further fleshed out and added to the in-game world.
Since Cube 3D is also open source, everyone not on the Roblox platform can use it as well.
While ‘mesh’ is the first tool included with Cube 3D for now, the developers will be adding text generation, text-to-speech, and speech-to-text tools to the platform in the coming months. They also plan on enabling more complex and functional objects as part of the long-term development of AI-based creative tools.
