Oppo Find X7 Ultra review - Best camera in an Android smartphone?

Smile for the camera. With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Oppo has equipped the Find X7 Ultra with a top processor and also uses the best of the best in the rest of the hardware. But the clear highlight is the Hasselblad quad camera with its 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor, which gives the Oppo smartphone the potential to push top smartphones such as the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max off the camera throne.

With the Find X7 Ultra, Oppo introduces its new flagship smartphone to the market. Like its Find X6 Pro predecessor, it is equipped with a Hasselblad camera system and is supposed to stand up to the best camera smartphones. The Find X7 Ultra therefore has to be compared with premium smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

While the Find X6 Pro still used three cameras, there is now one more. All the cameras of the Find X7 Ultra's quad camera system have a resolution of 50 MP and use Sony's brand-new Lyta sensors. The main camera is based on the Sony LYT-900 sensor in the 1-inch format. This is accompanied by an ultrawide angle camera (Sony LYT-600) and two periscope telephoto cameras (Sony IMX890 and Sony IMX858) that reach up to 6x optical zoom levels.

For the remaining hardware, Oppo also uses only the best of the best. With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Find X7 Ultra is equipped with one of the fastest smartphone SoCs. A fast, 120 Hz LTPO AMOLED panel with a 3168x1440 pixel resolution is also included again, but now it is even supposed to reach a maximum brightness of up to 4500 Nits.

Case - Glass and faux leather on the back

The case design of the 6.82-inch Find X7 Ultra follows that of its predecessor closely. Looking at the front, you can hardly see any difference to the Find X6 Pro. The AMOLED panel is rounded on both long sides and protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, as is the back cover. The selfie camera is housed underneath a punch hole in the display.

In the back cover, the Find X7 Ultra reuses the two-color design of the Find X6 Pro, combining a matte glass back cover with a large camera module that sticks out by about 5 millimeters (~0.2 in) from the back. In contrast to the predecessor, the bottom half of the back cover is now covered by faux leather in all the color versions (blue, black, and brown). This looks elegant, provides the smartphone with good haptics, and gives fingers a secure purchase.

The quality of the workmanship in the Find X7 Ultra is first rate. Any material transitions are tight and flush. In our test, the smartphone resists any attempts of warping, without producing any creaks at all. The Find X7 Ultra is protected from dust and water according to the IP68 standard.

With its weight of 221 grams (~7.8 oz), the Oppo smartphone is in good company, with other flagship smartphones also ranging in the same weight class.

Equipment - Up to 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage in the Find X7 Ultra

At the time of this test, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra is only available as an import, for example from TradingShenzhen who provided us with our test unit. It is not clear yet, whether it will also be offered officially in Germany at some point. But that might be possible, since after an agreement in its patent struggle with Nokia, Oppo is again allowed to market its smartphones outside of China.

Oppo offers the Find X7 Ultra in three storage versions that are all equipped with LPDDR5X RAM and fast UFS 4.0 storage. In contrast to many other high-end competitors, there is strangely no option for 1 TB of storage.

The OTG-capable USB-C port operates at USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 speed, which should allow it to reach transfer speeds around 300 MB/s in practice. But in our copy test using an external Samsung 980 Pro SSD, the USB-C port remains behind our expectations, since it doesn't reach more than 164 MB/s. Connected media can be formatted in NTFS or exFAT.

With Bluetooth 5.4, an IR blaster, and NFC, the Oppo smartphone offers the good equipment typical for the price class. Although some features such as a 3.5-mm audio port and a storage expansion option via microSD card are lacking, they are the rare exception in this smartphone segment anyways. Among our comparison devices, only the Sony Xperia 1 V offers both of those options.

Software - Android 14 and up to 5 years of updates

The Find X7 Ultra includes Android 14 with the manufacturer's inhouse ColorOS user interface. Oppo plans to provide 4 years of OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates for its smartphone. According to the manufacturer, the latter is supposed to happen in monthly intervals. And Oppo also delivered as promised: at the time of our test in the beginning of April, the smartphone received an update (ColorOS 14.0.1.501) that brought the Android security patches to the current level of March 5.

With this, the Find X7 Ultra is well-positioned in terms of software updates, even though some of the competitors offer even more. For example, there will be 7 years of updates for Samsung's Galaxy S24 series and the Google Pixel 8 series, which goes for both the security patches and also version updates.

With the import version of the Find X7 Ultra, you get the Chinese ColorOS version, but that also supports English. The list of supported languages also includes French and Russian, but not German. In the state of delivery, the Chinese ROM doesn't include any preinstalled Google apps. However, you can install the Google Play Store and other Google apps without any problems after you activate the Google Mobile Services in the Android Settings under Additional Settings, Google Settings.

Communication and GNSS - WiFi 7 and LTE band 20

Even though the Find X7 Ultra supports WiFi 7, it is unable to use the 6-Gigahertz frequency band of our Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 reference router. At a maximum value of 967 Mb/s, the WiFi transfer rates therefor turn out comparatively low. But at least they are very stable in both the sending and the receiving directions.

Although the import version of the Find X7 Ultra is optimized for the Chinese market, it supports many of the frequency bands important in Germany, including the LTE band 20 and 28, so that nothing would prevent you from using it in the EU area. Oppo doesn't specify any concrete SAR values for its smartphone, and the included information leaflet only says that the maximum SAR value is below 2 W/kg.

The Find X7 Ultra determines its own location using the GPS (L1, L5), Glonass (L1), Galileo (E1, E5a), Beidou (B1, B1C, B2A), and QZSS (L1, L5) satellite navigation services. In our test, it succeeds both outdoors and indoors with an accuracy of up to 3 meters (~10 ft).

The navigation capabilities of the Find X7 Ultra fail to inspire any enthusiasm in our test. While most of the time, the Oppo smartphone manages to record our route during our 10-km (~6.2 miles) bike tour just as accurately as the Garmin Venu 2 fitness smartwatch, at times the smartphone also suffers from some serious dropouts, locating us far from our actual route.

Telephone Functions and Voice Quality

The Find X7 Ultra offers a dual-SIM slot for two Nano-SIM cards and in addition to VoLTE, it also supports WLAN calls. However, eSIMs cannot be activated.

The Oppo smartphone scores with a good voice quality in our test. Background noises are filtered out efficiently even in louder surroundings, and our voice is transmitted loud and clear to our conversation partner.

Cameras - 4x 50 MP and the 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor

The selfie camera of the Find X7 Ultra uses the 32-MP Sony IMX709 (21 mm, f/2.4). It doesn't use pixel binning and is able to record attractive pictures with many details and a nice Bokeh effect.

The center piece of the Find X7 Ultra is the quad-camera system that was set up in cooperation with Hasselblad. It consists of a 50-MP main camera with the Sony LYT-900 sensor in the 1-inch format (23 mm, f1.8, OIS), a 50-MP ultrawide angle lens (Sony LYT-600, 14 mm, f/1.6) with a 4-cm macro, a 50-MP periscope tele lens (Sony IMX890, f/2.6, 65 mm, 3x, OIS), and a 50-MP zoom lens (Sony IMX858, f/4.3, 135 mm, 6x, OIS). Since the update to ColorOS version 14.0.1.501, all four cameras also support RAW recordings with 50 MP.

By default, the 50-MP main camera takes 12.5 MP photos that look excellent in any recording situation. In daylight, it is able to score with a large dynamic range, accurate color reproduction, and high amount of detail with minimal image noise. At night, the performance of the main camera is also worthy of a flagship, since it is able to handle even difficult recording conditions very well with its light-sensitive 1-inch image sensor. Overall, it is one of the best smartphone cameras currently available that can easily stand up to the powerful flagship competitors such as the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max and Google Pixel 8 Pro.

The two telephoto cameras use a 3x and 6x optical zoom respectively and reach a digital zoom of up to 120x. Both are able to take pictures that are rich in detail, have accurate colors, and also show high image sharpness even in the edge areas.

Even though the quality of the 50-MP ultrawide angle camera is slightly lower than that of the main and telephoto cameras and is unable to fully keep up with their level of detail, it still achieves an image quality that is above average. The pictures only become slightly blurry and noisy at the edges. The ultrawide angle camera also serves as a macro lens.

All 5 cameras of the Find X7 Ultra are able to record videos at up to 4K and 60 frames per second, delivering a very good image quality in our test. In the camera module on the back, you can switch back and forth between all the lenses during a recording at up to 4K and 60 FPS, and additionally you can also activate Dolby Vision for HDR recordings. But you cannot switch between the main and selfie camera during a recording.

We take another look at the main camera under controlled light conditions. In optimal light conditions, the colors are recorded very accurately (Delta E < 10), and the whole area of the test chart is still reproduced at 1 Lux of remaining light.

The box of the Find X7 Ultra includes a 100-Watt charger (11V/9.1A), a USB cable, a SIM tool, a protective cover, and a quick-start manual. If you buy the smartphone from TradingShenzhen (in Europe) who provided our test unit, you also get an EU adapter for the charger.

The Find X7 Ultra comes with a 12-month warranty.

Input Devices and Operation - With a special key for privacy mode

The Find X7 Ultra implements inputs on its capacitive touchscreen accurately and without any noticeable delays. The power button and volume rocker also contribute to the high-quality overall impression, sitting tightly in the frame and offering a crisp pressure point. The vibration motor provides a powerful and haptically attractive feedback.

Similar to Apple's iPhone 15 series, the Find X7 Ultra also offers an additional key on the left side of the case. Oppo's version of the "Action Button" is a sliding key that allows you to silence the smartphone (slide toward the bottom: off, center position: on). But there is also another function: If you slide the key toward the top, "VIP Mode" is activated, and the camera, microphone, and location-related services are then turned off to protect your privacy.

The optical fingerprint sensor is housed underneath the display. It unlocks the smartphone quickly and reliably. If you like, you can adjust the animation of the sensor and also activate a sound when the fingerprint sensor is touched. You can also use 2D face recognition for biometric authentication. With a sufficient amount of daylight, it is able to authenticate us just as quickly as the fingerprint sensor.

Display - LTPO AMOLED panel with 120 Hz

The LTPO AMOLED panel of the Find X7 Ultra has a resolution up to 3168x1440 pixels. It is able to adjust its refresh rate smoothly between 1 and 120 Hz depending on the display contents. Alternatively, you can also fix it at either 60 or 120 Hz. In addition, you can also set the refresh rate for each installed app, selecting between 60, 90, or 120 Hz.

Oppo promises a maximum brightness of 4500 Nits for the display, but it doesn't even come close to that in the test. Although all the values we measured are good even for premium standards, some of the competitors are able to reach significantly higher values.

We measure the top value in HDR mode at 1578 cd/m². With a pure white background, the AMOLED panel reaches up to 1154 cd/m², and with an even distribution of bright and dark image areas (APL18), the maximum brightness is 1139 cd/m². At the lowest brightness level, we still measure 2.52 cd/m².

At all brightness levels, the AMOLED panel isn't spared the flickering that is typical for this technology. At minimum brightness, we measure a PWM frequency of 91 Hz using the Rigol oscilloscope. Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

You can adjust the color display of the AMOLED panel in the display settings by choosing among three color modes: Natural (default), Pro, und Vivid. In addition, you can also adjust the color temperature by using a color circle or selecting among the presets Warm, Default, and Cold.

The display offers the best image quality in the Pro mode, which uses the DCI-P3 color space. As our analysis with the photo spectrometer and Calman analysis software shows, the color deviations from the ideal target values are low enough, so they won't be noticeable with the bare eyes.

When using it outdoors, the Find X7 Ultra leaves a very good impression, since the contents can still be read easily on the display even in direct sunlight. However, adjusting the display brightness manually turns out to be more of a disadvantage. If you deactivate auto brightness and with that also the brightness sensor, the maximum brightness levels will then remain far from reaching four-digit values. During our test, it doesn't reach more than 781 cd/m². The viewing angles are stable.

Performance - Find X7 Ultra with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra uses one of the fastest smartphone processors. But the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, which offers a clock speed of up to 3.39 GHz (vs. 3.3 GHz in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3) and is introduced in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is even slightly faster.

If you want to get the maximum performance from the Oppo smartphone, you have to activate the High Performance Mode in the battery settings. We use this mode for our benchmarks.

In our test, the Find X7 Ultra impresses with its top performance, sharing the top places with comparison devices such as the Honor Magic6 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra – faster is currently not possible. Only in Geekbench 6.2 does the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max reach an even higher single-core and multicore performance. On the other hand, the Find X7 Ultra and Honor Magic6 Pro are the only smartphones in our comparison that are able to reach the full number of points in the AImark v3 AI benchmark.

The Adreno 750 used in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is currently probably the fastest Android GPU. In the graphics tests, it propels the Find X7 Ultra far ahead, leaving the Apple A17 Pro GPU of the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max clearly behind. Only the onscreen tests of GFXBench don't turn out particularly good, but this is due to the benchmark limiting the frame rate to 60 FPS even though the 120-Hz display is activated.

In the browser performance, the Find X7 Ultra subjectively does an excellent job, with web sites loading very quickly and the ability to scroll through them smoothly and speedily. However, this is not reflected by the browser benchmarks, since the Oppo smartphone ends up only in the middle of the comparison field here.

With its UFS 4.0 storage, the Find X7 Ultra reaches an extremely high data throughput value. Even larger apps are installed very quickly and loaded after a few moments. In the Honor Magic6 Pro, the internal storage uses a similarly fast connection, while the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra limps behind significantly in the sequential and random writes, despite using an identical storage type.

Games - Smooth gaming but mostly only at 60 fps

With the Adreno 750, the Find X7 Ultra uses one of the currently most powerful GPUs to achieve effortless game play even at high detail levels. We evaluate the possible frame rates with Gamebench, using the examples of Genshin Impact and PUBG Mobile.

The Oppo is unable to make full use of its maximum frame rate of 120 frames per second, at least in our test games. However, this is not because the Find X7 Ultra wouldn't be capable enough, but because an FPS limit is set, which is probably done for power saving reasons. On the other hand, PUBG Mobile and Genshin Impact run at a smooth 60 FPS in their highest respective graphic settings. PUBG Mobile only offers a 90-FPS mode in the Smooth lowest detail level.

Emissions - Good stereo speakers in the Find X7 Ultra

Temperatures

In our test, the Find X7 Ultra heats up under load to a maximum temperature of 44.3 °C (111.7 °F), which feels noticeably warm. But even with that, the smartphone still remains within a thermal range that gives no reasons for concern at all.

Since the Find X7 Ultra is unable to effectively dissipate its heat, throttling remains the only remedy. During our test, we already made it easy for the smartphone by running the load scenario of the Burnout benchmark in reduced settings (CPU only), since the app otherwise terminates due to danger of overheating.

With its throttling, the Find X7 Ultra is in good company, since other smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 have the same problem and use the same solution. In the Wild Life stress test of 3DMark, the losses in performance aren't quite as high as those of the Honor Magic6 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Speakers

The stereo speakers of the Find X7 Ultra create a relatively good sound spectrum, producing a fairly balanced sound at medium volume levels. Even though they still don't distort at maximum volume, the sound is then fairly tinny with overemphasized highs.

External audio devices can be connected to the smartphone via USB-C cable or Bluetooth 5.4. The Oppo smartphone supports the AAC, SBC, LDAC, and LDHC, as well as aptX, aptX HD, aptX TWS+, and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codecs.

Battery Life - A complete recharge within 28 minutes

Power Consumption

The 5000 mAh battery of the Find X7 Ultra can be recharged wirelessly at up to 50 watts, and using the included charger, it recharges at up to 100 watts. It takes 28 minutes in our test to completely recharge an empty battery in this way, with 50% of the battery capacity already available after 11 minutes and 85% after 20 minutes. Reverse wireless charging at 10 watts is also supported by the Find X7 Ultra.

We don't see any anomalies in the power consumption of the Oppo smartphone. The relatively high values under load are due to the demanding Burnout benchmark.
