Oclean X Pro Elite sonic toothbrush in test: Philips Sonicare alternative with AI & touchscreen
After we have already tested the Flagship toothbrush from Oclean, it is now the turn of the inexpensive X Pro Elite model. The RRP of the ultrasonic toothbrush is around 90 Euros (~$98), but the X Pro Elite is already available for less than 60 Euros (~$66).
Like the X Ultra S, the Oclean sonic toothbrush comes with an in-house Maglev motor, which is said to achieve a noise level of less than 45 decibels and a powerful cleaning performance thanks to the 84,000 vibrations per minute. Despite its relatively low price, the X Pro Elite has a touchscreen and AI features. The manufacturer also advertises an extremely long running time of up to 35 days.
Case - Oclean X Pro Elite with good workmanship
The X Pro Elite is relatively similar to the flagship toothbrush from Oclean, although the housing of the X Ultra S has a slightly matte appearance and the display glass has a silver coating. However, the X Pro Elite also makes a high-quality and modern impression. Although Oclean does not provide exact specifications for the screen of its Elite model, we cannot see any difference to the 0.96-inch OLED panel of the X Ultra S.
In terms of build quality, there is nothing wrong with the X Pro Elite, nor with the IPX7 certification. This means that the toothbrush can be cleaned under water without any problems.
Scope of delivery & accessories - Philips Sonicare alternative charges wirelessly
The X Pro Elite comes with a user manual and a USB induction charging station (5 volts and 1 ampere) as standard. Our premium set (~$120) also includes a travel case, a magnetic wall mounting bracket and seven brush heads. The latter are available via the manufacturer's website or in online stores. There are four types to choose from: Professional cleaning, plaque control, gum care and gentle care.
A 6-pack starts at around 30 Euros (~$33) at the time of our test and the 2-pack at around 13 Euros (~$14). This means that the Oclean replacement brushes are not really cheap, but the follow-up costs are reasonable compared to the attachments for a Philips Sonicare and electric toothbrushes from other manufacturers.
According to the manufacturer's recommendations, the brush heads should be replaced every 3 months - the duration and number of uses is logged by the toothbrush in the app. However, the toothbrush itself does not indicate a recommended brush head change.
Operation & functions - sonic toothbrush reacts to touch
The Oclean X Pro Elite can be set up via the "Oclean Care+" application, which is available for iOS and Android - however, it can only be used with an extra account. Compared to the X Ultra S the setting options in Oclean Care+ are very limited and the data collected on brushing habits is somewhat more rudimentary. However, as firmware updates can only be installed via the application using an established Bluetooth connection, pairing with the Pro model is still recommended.
The X Pro Elite is operated via a push button and the touch color display, which shows the program, duration and brushing intensity. In our test, the touchscreen responded better than that of the X Ultra S, although there were occasional interruptions, meaning that swipe gestures had to be repeated.
According to the manufacturer, the X Pro Elite works at 84,000 movements per minute, making the ultrasonic toothbrush one of the most powerful sonic toothbrushes on the market. Similar to the X Ultra S, an in-house Maglev magnetic levitation motor is used, which uses the magnetic levitation force to transfer energy to the brush head. Nevertheless, we find the vibrations of the X Pro Elite at maximum level less intense than with the flagship toothbrush from Oclean. A Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 also provides noticeably stronger vibrations in the oral cavity.
Application & cleaning performance - Philips Sonicare alternative shows cleaning weaknesses
We used the Oclean X Pro Elite permanently at the highest level, 32, in our test. Due to the lower intensity of the vibrations compared to the competition, lower levels are probably only suitable for users with sensitive gums. In our opinion, the cleaning programs do not differ too much from one another. Nevertheless, the Maglev motor of the X Pro Elite delivers a satisfactory cleaning performance with a smooth tooth feel. However, the X Ultra S or a ProtectiveClean 5100 provide a subjectively more intensive cleaning.
According to Oclean, a pressure control is available, which is even supposed to be AI-controlled, but the electric toothbrush did not react perceptibly to high pressure in our test. This is a bit of a shame, especially as the X Pro Elite does not give a signal if users move the brush head too quickly in the oral cavity.
When the toothbrush from Oclean is picked up, the display wakes up from standby and greets the user on the 0.96-inch screen. However, this works much less reliably than with the X Ultra S, so we often have to help out with the physical button.
The displayed content is easily recognizable, but the panel could be a little brighter and larger. Unfortunately, customization is not possible. At least the battery status of the toothbrush is displayed, which the flagship toothbrush from Oclean has so far lacked.
The X Pro Elite reminds users to change the brushing area every 30 seconds and has 8-zone recognition. The color display provides the user with feedback on the cleaning result after the timer has expired via the built-in gyroscope. In contrast to the X Ultra S, however, the quadrant evaluation of the Pro model seems less accurate and less reliable. In the test, we always scored over 97 points, even though areas were deliberately not cleaned thoroughly.
Running times - The battery of the Oclean X Pro Elite lasts a very long time
The X Pro Elite draws power from a lithium-ion battery, the capacity of which is not specified. However, the battery is said to last up to 35 days. In our test, we used the ultrasonic toothbrush twice a day for 2.5 minutes. The battery life is very satisfactory in everyday use, but we did not reach the advertised 35 days.
After 11 days of use, we charged the toothbrush for the first time after the initial set-up (initial charge: 88 percent) with a remaining capacity of 27 percent. After a further 10 days, our fully charged Oclean X Pro Elite had a remaining capacity of 62 percent. This gives us a theoretical runtime of around three to four weeks in the test. The integrated battery can be charged wirelessly in around three hours using the inductive charging station.
Pro
+ long running times
+ oral cavity detection
+ good display with touch gestures
Cons
- few setting options
- replacement brushes quite expensive
Verdict
Although the Oclean X Pro Elite has been on the market for a while now, it still presents itself as a modern and visually appealing ultrasonic toothbrush. The Pro model stands out positively with its color display including touchscreen, which is impressive overall despite slight response weaknesses. The running times of the X Pro Elite are also more than satisfactory, especially in comparison to the competition from Philips Sonicare.
Thanks to its good runtimes, the Oclean X Pro Elite is an interesting choice for on-the-go.
Our test revealed slight weaknesses in daily use (no noticeable pressure control, irregular waking from standby, ...) and customizability. In addition, the vibrations of the Maglev motor are noticeably less intense than those of the flagship model X Ultra S. Anyone expecting the brushing sensation of a Philips Sonicare with the Oclean X Pro Elite will probably not be satisfied.
Price and availability
The white version of the Oclean X Pro Elite is currently available on Amazon at prices starting at around 60 Euros (~$66). The black version of the sonic toothbrush that we tested currently costs at least 74 Euros (~$81) on Amazon. Six brush heads currently cost around 22 Euros (~$24).
