More capacity: HPQ's 21700 battery reaches 23.4 Wh (6,500 mAh)

Battery specialist HPQ Silicon has just announced a new 21700 battery platform. With the fourth generation of the Endura+ platform, HPQ managed to squeeze 23.4 watt-hours into a single 21700 cell form factor or 6,500mAh@3.6V. Like Acebeam's recently announced 6,400 mAh 21700 battery, HPQ also needed to lower the voltage slightly, which reduces the total energy (Wh) relative to the mAh rating. Acebeam just reached 22.4 Wh which is also higher than typical 6,000 mAh batteries even at 3.7 volts.
However, HPQ's Endura+ Gen4 isn't ready for the commercial market yet, though. But it is close. The silicon-anode battery has reached UL 1642 certification, a standard for lithium ion battery safety. HPQ's fourth generation platform is also UN 38.3 certified, which is important for the transportation sector in order to avoid hazards during the shipment of cells.
The company itself managed to increase the capacity by 8.3 percent compared to the Gen3 platform (6,000 mAh) while staying within the limits of 21700 cells. The energy density increased from roughly 300 to 319.9 Wh/kg.
HPQ Silicon has not yet announced any market availability for the new cell platform by any partners. But the signs for higher capacity batteries are there. HPQ even reached more than 7,000 mAh in a 21700 cell in laboratory settings. So there is most likely more to come.
