Tesla has announced an official window tinting service and will reinstall the tinting film for free if the window glass breaks according to the terms set out in its basic vehicle warranty.

Tesla is now offering front and rear window tinting service with sunroof as an option, which starts from $150 and goes up to more than $1,200.

The Tesla tinting service is provided in an official partnership with Xpel, and it will be Tesla's responsibility to reinstall the tint film if the glass breaks under its basic vehicle warranty terms.

The price for tinting the Model Y front windows starts from $150 with a basic film and goes all the way up to $1,275 for a full Model Y window and sunroof tinting with the most premium film of Xpel that provides the ultimate protection.

Still, a simple front driver and passenger window tint of the Model Y with Xpel's midrange Premium XR film that stops 99% of UV rays and reflects 85% of infrared heat is $225.

That is hardly a dealbreaking step up from the cheapest option that only rejects 35% of the infrared heat and is simply a colored film. The most expensive Prime XR Plus film option for the Model Y Tesla Window Tint service is still a very decent $275 for the front windows, and brings dual-layer Nano Ceramic coating along with 96% heat rejection.

A full set of side and rear window tint for the Model Y with the Premium XR Plus film would run owners $700, and the same goes for the Cybertruck. Tesla Model 3 window tinting under the partnership would for some reason be more expensive, though, at $850.

The way the official Tesla window tinting works is running it as a service request upon order and charging the card stored in the app. The nearest participating Xpel products dealer will then contact the owner to schedule the tinting appointment.

Tesla only gets involved if the windows break under warranty to reinstall the tinting film, which is one advantage of going through it to order tinting. On the other hand, the closest or best area shops with the most experience tinting Teslas might be excluded from taking part in the program simply because they don't carry all the brand's products like the Xpel Clear Paint Protection Film as it is something one can wrap on their own.

Tesla owners also have to negotiate windshield tinting directly with the shop scheduled for the job, as Tesla won't assume the liability, and the payment for windshield tinting, as well as the potential removal when returning a leased vehicle, have to be settled with the Xpel dealer directly.
