Mix towering dinosaurs with massive swords and a dash of Souls-like gameplay, and you get DinoBlade. This action RPG recently released a free demo on Steam, which has so far been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from players.

In DinoBlade, the name says it all – giant dinosaurs wielding massive swords face off in intense battles. The game marks the first solo project from Jean Nguyen, a senior animator at Sucker Punch Productions who previously worked on major titles such as Call of Duty: Vanguard. With the demo’s release on October 28, DinoBlade has reached an important milestone.

According to the Steam description, DinoBlade is an action RPG set in a prehistoric world shaken by a mysterious catastrophe – one that has changed the way dinosaurs survive. Instead of teeth and claws, they now fight with swords clutched in their jaws. Players take on the role of a young Spinosaurus wielding a massive greatsword, struggling to survive against other fearsome predators in this brutal new era.

DinoBlade leans heavily on classic Soulslike mechanics. Button-mashing won’t get you far – you’ll need to read enemy patterns, time your dodges, and block with precision. Defeated foes drop souls that can be spent to upgrade your character through skill points. Players have praised the demo for its fluid combat, impressive animations, and unique setting, earning it a 98% positive rating on Steam. Still, some criticism remains, mainly directed at technical issues such as stuttering and frame drops, as well as a level and skill system that still feels underdeveloped.

The demo lets players experience the opening chapter of DinoBlade for free, offering about an hour of gameplay that includes several mini-boss encounters and a main boss fight. The full version is scheduled for release in 2026, though no price or specific launch window has been announced yet. Steam Deck compatibility (available on Amazon for $440) is currently listed as “Unknown.”
