The MSI Prestige Studio 16 looks good from the outside. It has the all-metal chassis that we yearn to sit behind in coffee shops, some fast internal storage and ports to transfer data, plus a Mini-LED screen that produces good colour and brightness. The benchmark tests paint a different picture, however, and with a battery that lasts seven hours it’s a tricky machine to recommend for creative work on the move, as its competitors are pulling away. The MSI Prestige 16 Studio certainly looks the part, with its Mini-LED screen, aluminium casing and handsome looks, but it suffers in benchmark tests, and doesn’t have advanced features like Thunderbolt that users of fast connectivity will be looking for.

The MSI Prestige 16 Studio is a great pick for content creators looking for a low-cost, large-screen laptop. Its miniLED panel is impressively bright for creating and editing HDR content, and the 16-inch 16:10 size offers a large canvas on which to work. You’ll need to accept a less-than-stellar build quality, however, and be okay with slower data transfers with the lack of Thunderbolt 4 support. And you’ll want to keep a pair of headphones handy because A. the speakers are pretty terrible and B. the laptop gets loud under load.

MSI’s thin and light creator laptop for 2023 gets a 16” mini LED QHD+ display, an Intel Core i7-13700H with EVO certification and NVIDIA RTX 4050 / 4060 graphics. The MSI Prestige 16 Studio A13V is relatively reasonably priced for a content creation laptop, running $1,800 - $2,000. It has an ample selection of ports, a number pad on the keyboard, and both Windows Hello IR camera and a fingerprint reader.

Between the inconsistent performance, instability, and unnerving display whine, the Prestige 16 Studio is a laptop to avoid. Toss in the underwhelming performance of its mini-LED display, and the machine is one of the most disappointing I’ve reviewed in quite some time. If MSI can resolve these issues, then at its $2,100 price, the Prestige 16 Plus could be a contender. But as it is, it’s far too flawed.

The MSI Prestige 16 (2023) is one of the most impressive laptops at Computex 2023, mostly because of that outstanding 24-hour battery life claim despite focusing on high-end creativity. No laptop with an RTX 4060 GPU can currently last that long on a single charge, so this would be a huge innovative leap. And with MSI implying this laptop could well be using a never-before-seen Intel Core processor, this could well be an exciting first glimpse of the next generation of Windows laptops. Is that enough for MSI to finally topple the MacBook Pro? I’m sceptical, but it’s possibly the best Windows laptop challenger yet.

This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.

74.29%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
