In the not-too-distant past, you needed big bucks to afford a gaming laptop that could actually play the latest games in all their high-res glory. With the MSI GX70 3BE-007US, you get speedy frame rates and a boatload of features in a relatively affordable 17-inch gaming laptop. However, this AMD-based system's productivity and multimedia performance leaves much to be desired.

The MSI GX70 3Be-007US gaming laptop costs a little more than the Editors’ Choice MSI GX60 1AC-021US, but it is money well spent. It adds a backlit keyboard and larger screen, and it edged the GX60 in our gaming-centric tests, running 3D games at playable frame rates even at 1080p resolution. The MSI GX70 3Be-007US gaming laptop provides playable 3D gaming, even at full HD resolution and with all the eye candy, for a modest price.

The MSI GX70 3Be-007US put up splendid scores for 3D hi-res gaming for a laptop of its price, even when pitted against two comparably priced Editors' Choice gaming laptops, the CyberPower FangBook X7-200 and the MSI GX60 1AC-021US. If your interests extend beyond gaming, the FangBook X7-200 provides more well-rounded performance while still putting up very good frame rates for its price. But the GX70 comes through where it matters most for gamers, earning its place as a new Editors' Choice for entry-level gaming laptops.

MSI’s GX70 has been parachuted into a market which is filled with notebooks sporting Intel’s latest processors and NVIDIA graphics chips but that hasn’t prevented it from becoming an enticing, affordable alternative. At just $1300 it has the ability to compete with notebooks that cost hundreds more while still attaining respectable battery life and an excellent feature set.

MSI’s GX70 is a laptop with many pros and many cons. The system has a great keyboard, tons of ports, a quality non-gloss display and superb speakers. But it also suffers from spotty quality, a miniscule touchpad, and inferior endurance. Ultimately, though, this is a gaming laptop, and that’s where the GX70 really falls flat.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

66.9%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
