What first looks like a space capsule or a sleek, futuristic boat is actually one of the most advanced bathtubs in the world. More precisely, it's a shower robot developed by the Japanese company Science Co. that cleans and dries the entire body in just 15 minutes. Instead of brushes or cloths, the system uses ultra-fine microbubbles designed to gently lift away dirt and dead skin cells from deep within the pores.
One argument against the machine is that a regular shower can also clean the body effectively – and often in less than 15 minutes. However, the experience inside the cleansing capsule goes beyond basic hygiene. As it washes and dries the body, the robot also monitors vital signs such as heart rate and aims to create a calming wellness experience. Music, lighting effects and integrated displays are all part of the setup. A recent video on X offers a glimpse of how it works in practice.
First unveiled at Expo 2025 Osaka, the cleaning capsule is expected to appeal particularly to wellness centers. However, because the entire process is fully automated and requires no physical effort, it could also provide meaningful support for people with disabilities, especially in care facilities.
Exhibition starts in December 2025
Yamaha Holding, one of Japan’s largest electronics manufacturers, has announced that the machine will be on display starting December 25, giving potential buyers the chance to see it up close. The price is set at around 60 million yen, which corresponds to roughly $384,000 depending on the exchange rate.
Mass production is not planned. In the first year, only 40 to 50 units are expected to be produced, with sales targeting luxury hotels, onsen baths and care facilities. One hotel in Osaka has reportedly already placed an order. A smaller and more affordable version for private homes is being considered for the future, but neither this nor the official sales launch has been confirmed.
