Lenovo has shown off a somewhat odd new contraption at MWC 2025. The Yoga Solar PC Proof of Concept can supposedly charge your laptop using sunlight, and even ambient light, with Lenovo claiming you can get up to an hour's worth of video playback with just 20 minutes of direct contact to sunlight. The panel is just 15 mm thin and the laptop weighs 1.5 kg overall.
Commercially available solar cells' efficiency maxes out at 19-20%, but Lenovo claims the Yoga Solar PC Proof of Concept can go as high as 24% thanks to its "Back Contact Cell" technology, which moves the mounting brackets and grid lines to the back of the solar cells, maximizing active absorption. Its Dynamic Solar Tracking system constantly measures the solar panel's current and voltage and automatically adjusts the charger's settings to send the generated energy to the system as a priority.
Then there's the Yoga Solar PC kit, which is essentially two solar panels and a USB-C power bank. Unlike the above-mentioned laptop which requires dedicated hardware, the kit can work with anything that accepts power via USB-C. Unfortunately, Lenovo hasn't mentioned the price and availability of either product.
