Lenovo Thinkpad T420 Series
Laptop Mag calls the battery runtime "epic", Notebookreview.com writes 10 hours, no doubt, this smaller than average laptop is made for mobile use. Generally, the screen got good ratings except in the russian site Retera. They gave their T420 model a very bad rating.

An invariable constant. The tried and tested Thinkpad design has practically remained untouched on the outside. But from now on, the new Sandy Bridge hardware does its job inside the T420. Moreover, the compact office laptop boasts with an excellent communication configuration for the professional field.

The ThinkPad T420 or T420i is a great option as a college laptop. It has the battery life, usability and build quality it takes to get work done around campus. The option of configuring either a budget level laptop of around $800 or high-end laptop configuration of $1,400+ is great and allows you to design a laptop that fits your needs, but still get the same build and design quality no matter what you include. I like the fact the option for a higher resolution screen is present, for those of us that find we can do work more efficiently using two windows open at once on the screen you will appreciate the 1600 x 900 resolution screen. Overall a thumbs up on buying the T420 that is a worth successor to the previous ThinkPad T410 and improves on an already great line of laptops.

As expected, Lenovo have done their best to brush up their best-buy business notebooks series and present a product that is bound to have good grades with users who know exactly what they want. This model’s main selling points are its production quality, hefty software bundle by Lenovo and a high level of performance that won’t leave any user indifferent. All these considered, we feel it’s fair to excuse the few flaws that we’ve established to be plaguing this otherwise excellent PC. The belief that ThinkPad users remain ThinkPad users for life remains unchanged.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a typical-looking 14-inch business laptop that has a few things going for it. First, it has really good performance due to its Intel Core i5 CPU and 4GB of RAM. It also has a decent amount of connectivity, including eSATA, and extra long battery life.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is solidly constructed and offers racehorse performance. It's highly configurable with multiple warranty options, as befits a business laptop. Just about every IT person we know swears by the T series, for their clients and themselves. That should tell you everything you need to know about the long-term reliability of these laptops.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is an impressive business class laptop that offers a lot of power packaged into a slightly smaller than average size that yields much improved battery consumption. The ThinkPad T420 is packed with features you won't find on a lot of other models, but those extra bells and whistles do come at a price. Overall, this is a solid machine that should more than meet your mobile computing needs.

The 14″ Lenovo ThinkPad T420 looks like most of Lenovo’s ThinkPads, emphasising efficiency over aesthetics. The exterior plastic has a dull scratch-resistant surface, tending to resist fingrerprints and smears. Supreme typing experience, stellar graphics performance, a paragon of connectivity, and world-beating endurance, a credit to any business.

Change comes slowly to the venerable ThinkPad T series, but when it does, it’s usually worth waiting for. With Sandy Bridge-grade speed, great battery life, durability features, and other goodies, the ThinkPad T420 is arguably today's best business thin-and-light. (But yes, it’s still basic black.)

The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a well-engineered 14" business notebook. It has the hallmark ThinkPad qualities including great build quality and a superior keyboard. I liked almost everything about it. The anti-glare screen prevents reflections and with a 1600x900 resolution, provides a lot of working space. The keyboard has a highly functional layout and the trackpoint and touchpad are easy to use. All this functionality can be taken to the road thanks to the 10 hours of battery from the optional 9-cell. Bottom line, the ThinkPad T420 isn't just a good business laptop ... the T420 is an excellent choice for business, home, and student use.

With its epic battery life, awesome keyboard, solid sound, durable design, and high-res screen, the ThinkPad T420 offers nearly everything you'd want in a 14-inch business system for a good price. If you're looking for something a bit lighter, consider the ThinkPad T420s, which weighs 1.2 pounds less but lasts half as long on a charge. However, if you want the ultimate thin-and-light productivity powerhouse, the ThinkPad T420 should be at the top of your list.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is an interesting beast. It goes against the grain of today’s laptops in many ways. It’s not stylish, it’s not thin, and it’s not light. The touchpad is a bit of an afterthought, functional but obviously playing second-fiddle to the trackpointer. The keyboard still looks and feels similar to the one offered by my T42 about five years ago.

Compared with laptops seen at CES 2012--ultrabooks and other sleekly designed variations--the ThinkPad T420 is a dinosaur, from the outside, at least. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is as straight-up and unassuming as a business laptop can be on the surface, souped up with faster performance, long battery life, and a flexible selection of ports under the hood.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA NVS 4200M: Business Graphics card that is based on the GeForce GT 520M with special BIOS and drivers for business applications. The clock speeds however can in theory slightly surpass the GT 520M, in the Latitude 6420 however they are at a level of the GT 520M.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2620M: Very fast Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i3:
2310M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.1 GHz and features the Turbo Boost 2.0 only for the graphics card (650/1100MHz).
Intel Core i5:
2520M: Dual-core Sandy Bridge processor with integrated graphics and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

82.23%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
