The only thing that keeps the Lenovo ThinkPad P17 Gen 2 from claiming an Editors' Choice award is its colossal bulk; unless you truly want a plus-size screen, there's no need to punish yourself by carrying this beefy workstation when equal or nearly equal power is available in lighter packages. (The ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 is literally less than half the weight.) But the P17's performance is faultless and its display tops the charts for quality as well as surface area. Got unlimited work to do? In fact, the P17 actually offers four times as many CPU and GPU configurations as its predecessors, and thanks to the new design, it can handle higher wattage GPUs. That can be up to 90 watts in the P15 or up to 110 watts in the P17.

Lenovo's P-series ThinkPads fall in line with the traditional ThinkPads. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, the display borders around the 16:9 display could have been slightly narrower. However, the Lenovo workstation shines where it matters, offering excellent performance and expandability.

Lenovo's ThinkPad P17 Gen 2 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation that can be configured with some extremely high-end specifications. However, its lack of a touch screen option, large screen bezels, bulk and weight, and poor speakers do it no favours. Battery life probably isn't high on the list of requirements for a 17-inch mobile workstation, but if you want more than the 3.5 hours delivered by our review unit, you'll need to specify a lower-resolution screen and a less powerful CPU/GPU combo. Which isn't really the point with a workstation-class laptop.
