LG G8 ThinQ

The G series may have been LG’s answer to the Samsung Galaxy S series for a long time. However, its sales figures over the past few years have been far lower than that of the S series. The G8, however, aims to change that. The ThinQ term was added to the G and V series to indicate its AI capabilities and its performance. This time around, the G8 has some pretty interesting features, such as its “Hand ID”, a feature that can be used to unlock the phone without even touching it. LG claims that the G8 ThinQ reads the blood in the palm’s veins to unlock the phone. Palm gestures can also be used to control music playback, answer calls, mute alarms and even perform some movements in the UI. All this can be done without touching the display. Some might say that these features are more of a gimmick rather than a useful function for the phone. After all, it has been tested before in other phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S4. It did not make much sense then and it probably does not make much sense now, either.

In terms of the actual phone hiding underneath this feature, all is rather good. For a start, its 8.4mm thickness fits the flagship status when compared to the other flagships. The G8 ThinQ comes with an all-glass design for the front and back of the phone. On the front, there is a 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels, giving it a pixel density of 564 ppi. It supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision. This display is currently one of the best displays out there, in the same range as the Galaxy S10 and OnePlus 7. It has a rather large notch to fit the front sensors. The chin, however, is quite small, giving the phone an all-display look (83.5% screen-to-body ratio).

The phone is shipped with LG UX 8.0 built on Android 9.0 (Pie). For its performance, it sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor, like most flagships today. This is coupled with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB for internal memory, which can be expanded by up to 1 TB by using a micro SD card. This phone, then, is capable of handling all heavy applications and playing some serious graphics-intensive games. In the imaging department, it comes with a triple camera setup, a 12MP standard lens with OIS, a 16MP ultra wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens with OIS. It is capable of capturing videos in 4K resolution, and the video quality is amazing, though still beaten by the iPhone Xs. On the front is a dual camera setup for selfies, with one 8MP camera and a Time Of Light 3D camera.

The loudspeaker offers quite good sound quality, and the hole-less top speaker functions by transferring vibration through the glass. Quite an interesting approach, and it sounds like a normal speaker. Other features include Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and FM radio. The phone comes with a 3500mAh battery that supports 21W quick charge 3.0 via the USB 3.1 Type-C port. The LG G8 ThinQ is shipped in four colors, namely gray, black, blue, and red. With a selling price quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10, it is hard to recommend the G8 ThinQ over other flagships. Overall, it is a great phone, but its main problem is that it does not shine in any particular way.

LG G8 ThinQ Audio review
Source: DxOMark English Archive.org version
Despite all its promises, the LG G8 ThinkQ’s audio performance leaves much to be desired. The Crystal Sound OLED technology, while certainly making it very hard for the speakers to be occluded by the user’s hand, produces a canny overall timbre with almost absent bass, lack of impact, and numerous artifacts. The noise-cancelling algorithm, albeit extremely efficient, also comes with its share of unfortunate consequences. To top it all, the HD Audio app records only mono files.

LG G8 ThinQ Review – And Also Bejeweled
Source: Tech Girl English Archive.org version
The bloatware is stupid. The gimmicks are dumb. They clog up an otherwise wonderful device. The cameras are fine. They take nice photos and you’ll be happy with your Instagram feed. The screen is great, the battery is fab and the processor is decent. The LG G8 thinQ is a good phone. It’s a really nice phone actually. If you’re willing to spend 20 minutes on set up taking off all the stupid stuff and ignoring the silly gimmicks you’ll be happy. You’re looking at a price point of anything from R8000 to R10 000. I think it is well priced and if you’re an Android fan you’ll be happy. Bejeweled is also the best time waster on the planet and everyone should download it.

The LG G8 ThinQ is your best (and cheapest) Samsung Galaxy alternative: our review
Source: Talk Android English Archive.org version
So for less money than what Samsung’s asking, you’re getting a phone that’s packed with almost as many features, still has your regular fingerprint scanner and headphone jack, and nearly identical performance. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for a flagship on a budget, check this one out.

LG G8 review

I’ve seen a lot of hate for the G8 and demonizing on the internet with people wondering why LG even tries anymore. Why? Because they make damn good phones. They make the best alternative to those who don’t like what’s out there from Samsung and Google here in the US. A lot of people don’t know whether to trust OnePlus or not since its a relatively new name. LG is safe. LG makes a really good phone with some compelling features that won’t frustrate you for the next couple of years. Unless you want fast software updates.

LG G8 ThinQ review: Gimmicks with a capital 'G'
Source: Good Gear Guide English Archive.org version
The G8 would be easier to recommend if it were $200 cheaper. As it stands, you can get a Galaxy S10e or an iPhone XR for $70 less than a G8, and both of those deliver a better UI and equal or better performance without the cheap tricks. The G8’s time-of-flight tricks only serve to cheapen the experience, rather than strengthen it with strong facial recognition and portrait shots.

There are plenty of reasons to buy the G8: top-of-the-line processor, excellent battery life, great screen, solid camera. But great specs and nice hardware aren’t enough when you’re competing with the Galaxies and Pixels of the world. The unique features that should make the G8 worthy of its $829 price tag are unfortunately where it falls short.

LG G8 ThinQ camera review
Source: DxOMark English Archive.org version
The LG G8 ThinQ’s camera is a competent rather than a stellar performer. It does most things reasonably well without really excelling or failing dramatically in any area. It produces colors that are attractive, if not always accurate, and its stills AF system is fast and effective. It also usually handles exposures well, underexposing only occasionally and even taking backlight situations in its stride unless the zoom is in use. Its video output is similarly pleasing in many situations, but the best results require a static shooting position and constant subject distance. The inconsistent bokeh performance is a little disappointing and not up to the standard of the current leader in this area (the Huawei P30 Pro). However, if you take a few shots and don’t intend to magnify the image, chances are that there will be a satisfactory image available.

In conclusion, the LG G8 gives you a size comparable to Galaxy S10+, but with a camera performance and a price closer to the 5.8” Galaxy S10e. That’s a proposition that is worth considering if you are looking for an aggressively priced high-performance phone that is highly functional.

The LG G8 Review: Solid, But Not Great
Source: AnandTech English Archive.org version
In the end, did the G8 deliver on the basics? In some regards, yes, while in others the G8 is still very much a compromise of a phone. LG has improved a lot on the camera and speakers. On the display side of things, the G8 is an improvement on paper but in practice it fails short. Battery life has improved in some regards, but if you tend to use your phone a lot in higher brightness levels the G8 will seem like a downgrade.

So here's the good: there's no camera bump, it's a beautiful and sleek design, a bright OLED display, and of course, not only does it have a 3.5mm headphone jack, but it's the best one on the market. At $849.99, I'd say it's a buy, depending on what your priorities are. Luckily, right now it's discounted to less than $650 pretty much everywhere, and that's a steal.

LG G8 ThinQ Review: An Affordable, Capable Flagship Smartphone
Source: Hot Hardware English Archive.org version
Regardless, the LG G8 ThinQ is a solid offering that will satisfy even demanding mobile device consumers. LG outfitted their Android flagship with a powerful SoC to make short work of any workload. It has a fantastic nearly edge-to-edge OLED display as well. Finally, the LG G8 ThinQ's very capable cameras are backed by a smart AI that can provide a guiding hand for better photos. While not ultimately a game-changing smartphone, we are none-the-less impressed by the LG G8 ThinQ and think it is worthy of recommendation.

LG G8 first impressions: Finally taking Samsung head on?
Source: Android Guys English Archive.org version
While this first impressions might come off overly harsh or negative, I think the LG G8 is a really solid phone. As I said at the outset, it’s probably the most comfortable in-hand phone on the market right now, even if it is pretty slippery. This comfort level cannot be overstated. Every time I pick up my OnePlus 6T or Samsung Galaxy S10+, I wish it was the LG G8 and that’s pretty impressive.

LG G8 ThinQ [REVIEW] : A much better phone than it gets credit for

There are a few offerings for the LG G8 ThinQ on your favorite carrier. AT&T has an offering at $829, Sprint and Verizon have it priced at $840 and T-Mobile has the absolute best offering at $619 with $200 being taken off for T-Mobile customers. It’s not a “budget” phone but it’s a lesser expensive option than the iPhone XS and the Samsung Galaxy S10. The LG G8 ThinQ is a phone that I would recommend anyone buy if they want a break from the norm. Forget the haters.

The G8 is a fine phone, but one that also struggles to stand out. It has hardware, specs and nice-to-have features that are all well-executed and enjoyable to use, plus a few neat additions like the speaker system and 3D-based face unlock. But LG's consistent missteps in software design, camera quality that doesn't stand up to the competition, and focus on new features like Air Motion that are purely distractions all get in the way of a core phone experience that is otherwise solid and worth considering.

Unfortunately, it's not all sunshine and roses. The Crystal Sound OLED panel's sound quality isn't the best we've seen. The 3D ToF-enabled features, except for the excellent portrait selfies and the Face Unlock, feels downright gimmicky. The Hand ID works really slow and it's unreliable, the Air Motion gestures need more work. And it's really hard to see any proper use case for those at all. It will be cool to show off to some friends but you will end up using the fingerprint reader, the Face Unlock and resort to tapping instead of waving with your hands when it comes to simple tasks like changing a track, capturing a screenshot and turning up the volume. Some kind of competitive fast charging tech would have been much more appreciated.

The G8, however, can be currently had for just a little over $600, which is significantly less – and a fair price considering what you get in exchange: a well-rounded Android phone with a good-looking screen, the fast Snapdragon 855 chip, and a capable set of cameras. We're also glad to see that LG stuck with a classic fingerprint reader and paired it with reliable facial recognition. In-screen fingerprint readers may look cool and futuristic, but they're simply not good enough yet to prefer over a classic solution.

LG’s new G8 ThinQ packs the performance you’d expect from a modern flagship phone and, as usual, it’s a great option for people who care about smartphone sound quality. Beyond that, there’s little here to set it apart from this year’s early crowd of premium devices, aside from a clever time-of-flight sensor that powers ambitious features that don’t actually work very well. At its best, the G8 ThinQ that doesn’t quite have the tools to outperform the competition. At worst, it’s an example of the uneven results that occur when a company tries to innovate without thinking about practicality.

LG usually overhauls its G-series each year, but comparing it to Apple’s smartphone naming conventions, the G8 is more of an “S” upgrade to the G7 ThinQ. Many things about it are the same, but there are a few improvements that might interest you. Most S-year phones are worth checking out because, as Dieter Bohn said in his review of the Pixel 3, “It’s better to be on the S-cycle: you get a faster phone, better camera, and the fixes that come after a year with the original design.” But aside from improved specs, the things that changed in the G8 ThinQ are things that I think most users can carry on without.

LG announced that G8 will be priced at $820. Interestingly, though, if you pay that much for this phone, I can guarantee you that you’re getting shafted. For instance, T-Mobile instantly dropped the price of the phone’s retail price to $620, which is basically unheard of. Or how about Best Buy and B&H? At Best Buy, you can get the phone for $649, while B&H has it for $699. When you go through a carrier’s monthly payment plans, like Verizon, you’ll paying just $490 over the course of 24 months. I recommend you check the links below and see what deals your specific carrier is offering if you want to buy this phone. LG G8s ThinQ

LG has made an announcement on the next upcoming line-up of its proud G series with one of the most touted smartphone models to date – the LG G8s ThinQ. It is the companion model to the original LG G8 ThinQ smartphone device but the G8s gears up on improved specifications and features, thus undeniably rendering the G8s the premium version of the series. The LG G8s ThinQ features a unique triple rear camera setup, which has undoubtedly begged a lot of questions from its target audience. What comes immediately into attention is the unique camera setup arrangement on the rear side of the phone. The landscape alignment of the rear camera introduces a whole new take on how the pictures are supposed to be taken. With a unique ensemble of a 12-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, users need not to fret about the quality of the pictures production other than staging for a perfect snapshot. Aside from a distinctive take on rear camera module, the LG G8s ThinQ also comes equipped with a 8-megapixel front-facing camera designed to take selfies. The front side of the LG G8s ThinQ is a rather controversial topic of discussion in the tech-savvy community. The G8s presents itself with a 6.2 inches OLED front display that supports Full HD+ resolution of 1.080 x 2.248 pixels. This specification is considered rather impressive for a device of its size. The display notch not only houses the aforementioned 8-megapixel front-facing camera, but also a 3D ToF (Time of Flight) sensor in tandem with the Hand ID security feature. The enabling of hand gestures to be detected has paved way for Air Motion technology. With the implementation of the Air Motion feature in the LG G8s ThinQ, users can now simply wave a hand or pinch the air in front of the front camera setup in order to make phone calls. This is a quality-of-life convenience that would most certainly appeal to certain demographic. However, the notched frontal design leaves very little to be desired among the global audience all around the world. Not only the representation of the LG G8s ThinQ depicted itself as generally mundane-looking, its relatively boring and dull aesthetic design is not doing any of its outstanding features any justice. The LG G8s ThinQ would only appear to look rather insignificant when displayed on a shelf space filled with other competing smartphones. The G8s ThinQ’s overall appearance is not captivating at all, and it is not exactly an attraction point worth mentioning. The LG G8s ThinQ is brimming with unending possibilities if a few more steps for extra mile were taken, but alas, it is nonetheless another wasted potential drifting about in the competitive scene of the smartphone industry. The LG G8S ThinQ has arrived late to the party, but it still brings a flagship SoC, a large OLED display, a ToF camera and a 3,550 mAh battery. The G8S ThinQ may have fancy camera tech, but it is otherwise a fairly run-of-the-mill flagship. However, read on to find out why we still think highly of LG’s latest attempt to disrupt the established order.
60% LG G8s ThinQ review: A missed opportunity
Source: Gadgets Now English Archive.org version
The LG G8s ThinQ is a phone that seems like a missed opportunity as it had the potential to bring the South Korean tech giant back in the reckoning. Its design seems stuck in the past and the display is just about satisfactory. Performance wise you won’t have any complaints as it is the case with the camera. But it lacks the X-factor or that one compelling reason to buy it. At Rs 35,990, it faces really tough competition from OnePlus, which has its loyal set of fan following and keeps offering great features. LG G8s ThinQ doesn’t tick all the boxes perfectly and in this competitive space, brands can’t afford to do that anymore. It’s time for LG to do some serious thinking if it’s really serious about people talking and about buying the ThinQ series of phones.

Despite all the bloat though, camera quality is genuinely very good. If that's what matters most to you, the LG G8s wouldn't be bad phone to buy. On the other hand, if you value gaming-grade performance, a high-end display, great battery life, or cutting-edge design, you should look elsewhere.

LG G8s ThinQ review: Comprehensive imaging prowess, sleek performance
Source: Business Standard English Archive.org version
Priced at Rs 35,990, the LG G8s ThinQ is a midrange smartphone that could be considered for comprehensive imaging capabilities and sleek performance. However, its dated design and small screen estate might irk some. If so, you might like to check the OnePlus 7T, Oppo Reno 2 and Asus ROG Phone II before making a decision.

Yes, for a unique smartphone experience that ticks all the boxes and gives some features which others don’t have. This is a smartphone that has maybe the best selfie camera, a good triple camera rig at the back, smooth overall performance and some gimmicky features that will make you standout.

But then there is other side to it. The camera could have been better. The display is dull in strong sunlight. The gesture navigation needs a lot of work. And the price is too high. This is the price at which phones like the OnePlus 7T sell. Then there are the devices like the iPhone XR, which too are around the similar price point in various sales. Against these phones, the G8s ThinQ looks overpriced.

84.6% LG G8X ThinQ Smartphone Review: A convertible among smartphones | Notebookcheck
The G8X ThinQ is a foldable smartphone with a difference. LG has opted for two distinct displays connected via a hinge, a simplistic solution to the more elaborate and expensive foldable smartphones we have seen of late. While the G8X ThinQ is an unusual concept, it still impressed us during our tests.
LG G8X ThinQ Review: Dual OLED Screens, Affordable Android
Source: Hot Hardware English Archive.org version
With everything the LG G8X ThinQ has to offer, it can currently be had for roughly $710, unlocked. In light of today's high-end Android phone market, where $1000+ smartphones are rapidly becoming the norm, the LG G8X ThinQ with its Dual Screen accessory is a relative bargain. If you're in the market for a quality, reliable phone, and don't need to be on the absolute bleeding-edge, the LG G8X ThinQ is worth checking out.

It also helps that the G8X ThinQ Dual-Screen is a respectable smartphone in many other ways, with dependable performance, long battery life, a good-if-not-great screen and — last but never least — a headphone jack. The relatively poor camera performance hampers the G8X a bit, but that’s a price some might be willing to pay for the phone's versatility. For better or worse, there’s really no phone like it out there today.

The G8X ThinQ is LG's unique way of joining the foldable smartphone bandwagon. While this isn't anywhere near the same as the Samsung Galaxy Fold, LG has managed to deliver something close in a cost-effective manner. Since LG bundles the dual-screen accessory with the G8X ThinQ, users get to experience a dual-screen device out of the box at no additional cost. The magnetic connector to charge the phone through the case is also a thoughtful addition.

LG G8X ThinQ review: Capable smartphone with experimental dual-screen case
Source: Business Standard English Archive.org version
At Rs 49,999, the LG G8X ThinQ is expensive, as it does not match competitors in imaging, performance or on-battery time. Nonetheless, it is the only phone that comes with a unique dual-screen case, which is good for multitasking, gaming and browsing the web. Try the LG G8X to experience something fresh, but do not keep your expectations too high.

70% LG G8X ThinQ review: Finally, a second screen that’s actually kind of useful
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
LG's been pushing its second-screen concepts since the V10 in 2015, so it's nice to see it come to fruition here. Even when half-baked and unlikely to realize its full potential, the G8X feels more like a culmination of effort than anything LG has done recently. In a few years, folding screens may be all the rage, and the G8X will seem quaint and comical. For now, it’s a sign of what’s possible with a little outside-of-the-box thinking.

LG G8X ThinQ Dual Screen review: a few steps shy of perfection
Source: Androidcommunity.com English Archive.org version
The LG G8X ThinQ Dual Screen is a wonderfully eccentric Android smartphone that won’t appeal to everyone. Some might even be rubbed the wrong way by how monstrous the whole contraption looks and feels like. You don’t always need to have the Dual Screen case on, though. You can take it off and slip into your bag (or other pockets) when you don’t need it and put it back on when you do. You don’t even need to have the dual screen turned on even if the case is. Simply turn it off to save battery and make it act like a thick protective cover for the G8X.

The LG G8X is a strange phone – and one showing that LG's mobile division is in dire need of a better strategy. LG's G series is supposed to be represented by quality phones with mass appeal. Instead, the G8X's key feature is a DualScreen case that few people need and fewer people will use. LG's energy and resources would have been much, much better spent had they been invested in a reliable fingerprint reader, a quality selfie camera, and a better software experience.

Foldable devices are still in their infancy, and that’s a combination of both the current state of hardware and software. LG G8X review: Really weird concept, and I love it

But if you think you want in on the ground floor of this strange folding revolution, I like the G8X a lot, quirks and all. LG is pricing it at just $699, and AT&T is giving them away for free (including the Dual Screen) with a new line right now, and we’re sure to see some great sales on it with the holidays coming up for everyone else. I don’t see this making its way into everyone’s pocket, but I think LG deserves some credit for actually trying something new and sticking the landing.

If you’re not sold on the Dual Screen, then the G8X is a fairly dull flagship for 2019 - decent specs and drab design combine for a handset that shouldn’t disappoint but won't do much to excite either. For those intrigued by a second screen however, the G8X Dual Screen proves that LG might be onto something, fixing almost every pain point from the original design. Folding phones may be the future, but until then the G8X proves that the dual display has its place.

LG G8X ThinQ Dual Screen review: For $700, better productivity than the Galaxy Fold
Source: Zdnet.com English Archive.org version
It's nice to see LG address a couple of the cons that ZDNet's Sandra Vogel listed in her full review. She mentioned lower resolution on the second screen and a poor speaker, but we now have the same resolution on both screens and solid stereo speakers. The resolution on the primary display has been lowered to match the second display, but at 403ppi, I doubt anyone will notice while the slightly better battery life may be worth the change in resolution.

74% LG G8X ThinQ review: More screens aren't always better
Source: Engadget English Archive.org version
As a standalone smartphone, the LG G8X is pretty easily outclassed. As a dual-screen device, it shows potential, but the experience is so inconsistent that the G8X never transcends its status as a gimmick. It is, however, a relatively inexpensive gimmick compared to the rest of the year's high-end phones, and that's enough to help me overlook some of the phone's flaws. Assuming you can get a good deal on one, the G8X isn't a bad way to get a feel for the multiscreen life, as unpolished as it is right now. Just don't mistake this phone for anything but what it really is: a stopgap solution while LG figures out what kinds of devices it really wants to make.

The LG G8X does not provide a sleek, futuristic experience. It is, however, still a phone that can do things that no other phone can do, and if those things sound useful to you, it’s a good deal at $699. The multitasking setup is the best I’ve ever had on a phone, for one thing, even if LG does get there by brute force.

LG G8X ThinQ review: A unique take on the foldable phone fad
Source: Techspot English Archive.org version
To navigate between screens, LG added an on-screen, moveable hotkey that offers fast entry to controls like “swap screens” and “show main on dual screen.” The controls are simple, however it nonetheless took me some time to make use of each screens fluidly and comfortably, and there are occasions even now when I’m a bit befuddled about what I wish to do subsequent after calling up the menu. You will not be capable of watch movies on a seamless, single pill display because of the hinge nor are you able to mirror each screens like you could possibly with the Axon M (that permit me share the identical video with a buddy sitting throughout from me).

The LG G8X's appeal may be niche, but it's an interesting concept that offers an alternative to foldable phones that gives budget-conscious buyers more screen for whatever they want to do on their phone. While the core device isn't too exciting, it packs the leading Snapdragon 855 processor and doesn't lack in performance - but whether to buy really boils down to how much one wants more screen real estate.

It's a shame to miss out on Android 10 out of the box, and alternatives like the Pixel 4 and OnePlus 7 Pro offer tempting extras like telephoto zoom cameras and 90Hz screens. If a second screen doesn't appeal, these are still better buys.

The G8X ThinQ appears to be a minor update to the G8 from the Spring, if it can be considered an update at all - the way we see it, it's meant to complement, rather than replace. As such it's not really all that exciting a device, but we can appreciate how it could have some people interested, in no small part thanks to the DualScreen.

LG G8X ThinQ Dual Screen initial review: Doubling down on two screens
Source: Pocket Lint English Archive.org version
The Dual Screen idea does have merit and, save for the increased weight and size, it could well be a simple way to give more of us extended smartphone real estate without the expense of a foldable. LG has also improved the design here, but needs a genuine smartphone contender to go alongside it.

LG G8X ThinQ review: Hands-on
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
If you’re not sold on the Dual Screen, then the G8X is a fairly dull flagship for 2019 - decent specs and drab design combine for a handset that shouldn’t disappoint but wouldn’t do much to excite either. For those intrigued by the possibilities of a second screen however, the G8X Dual Screen proves that LG might be onto something here. The bigger panel, better hinge, and front-facing notification display fix almost every pain point from the original design, meaning there’s less to get in the way of getting on with two things at once. It may not be as fancy as a folding phone - but LG’s on its second dual screen and so far no rival has put a functional foldable in consumers’ hands. Folding may be the future, but until then the G8X proves that the second screen has its place.

78.46%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
