Besides the lifetime vehicle and powertrain warranty, Hyundai will replace the Ioniq with a brand new car if the battery ever catches on fire. The capacity degradation warranty also includes battery replacements rather than repairs.

Hyundai is reviving its electric vehicle sales fortunes in China with a new Ioniq line that has been built from the ground-up with the local market in mind. First in line is the edgy Ioniq V fastback that starts from the equivalent of just $14,820 and offers an edgy design and lifetime vehicle warranty to set itself apart in the ocean of local electric car models.

Lifetime Ioniq V warranty

Hyundai took advantage of the new battery safety and lifespan mandates in China to offer a lifetime vehicle warranty for the first owner. While the global version of the Ioniq 5 typically carries a standard 10-year or 100,000-mile high-voltage battery guarantee, its heavily localized Chinese counterpart that is marketed as the Ioniq V comes bundled with lifetime coverage for the battery, electric motor, and electronic control system as part of its launch benefits.

Additionally, this protection plan goes beyond industry standards by offering full battery replacement for capacity degradation and legal compensation in the rare event of spontaneous battery fires, rather than repairs. Hyundai will also replace the whole battery if it degrades below 70% capacity within eight years or 100,000 miles covered.

The autonaker is not the first to offer a lifetime warranty in China, as Chery recently introduced a similar perk for the first owner of its new EVs equipped with the Rhino battery that comports to China's new GB38031-2025 battery safety standard, the toughest in the world.

Rather than simply asking for an early warning before a fire breaks out, the new standard demands that batteries won't catch on fire or explode for a full two hours after a thermal runaway event begins and that smoke won't enter the cabin.

Hyundai Ioniq V price and range

The quirky Ioniq V sedan measures 4,900 mm long on a 2,900 mm wheelbase and is front-wheel drive with 250 Nm of torque in every trim. The motor output is 140 kW with a 53.48 kWh CATL LFP pack rated for a 540 km CLTC range, or 168 kW with a 66.85 kWh pack that returns 650 km CLTC. Hyundai quotes 11.1 kWh/100 km electricity consumption and a 20-minute DC fast charge.

Launch pricing runs from the equivalent of about $14,820 at the low end, and Hyundai offers five trims: 540 Pro, 540 Max, 540 Max+, 650 Max, and 650 Max+. The "Max+" trims are the higher-end versions with a driver-assist system. The China-specific features of the Ioniq V include:

  • Cabin tech: a 27-inch 4K screen, a Snapdragon 8295P chip, and a detachable physical keypad for volume and climate. It also has Doubao and Baidu AI assistants, four-zone voice control, Dolby Atmos, and both Baidu and Amap navigation.
  • Driver assistance: a camera-based Momenta system with highway navigation assist, plus parking functions.
  • Practicality and safety: a front seat that folds fully flat, 465 L of trunk space, nine airbags, and heat-pump air conditioning.
  • Ownership: a lifetime vehicle warranty for the initial owner, with battery degradation and fire coverage that are subject to time and mileage limits.

The memory parking and urban navigation are promised via later OTA updates, and Hyundai offers the Ioniq V in several intriguing colors, from Cyber Gold to Gamma Green. The automaker intends to extend the lifetime warranty for the first owner to all of its upcoming electric vehicles in China, riding high on the new battery safety and endurance standards there. The car may eventually be released globally, but it is not clear when, at what price, or under what model name.
