At the end of the day, the HP ZBook Firefly 14 G8 is a solid offer when it comes to compact mobile workstations. The devil is in the details and that applies to this laptop as well – most of the goodies are optional which isn’t good news for most users because they have to pay extra if they need features like a Nano SIM card slot, NFC, fingerprint reader, SmartCard slot, and IR WebCam. As we said at the beginning of this article, even the backlight of the keyboard is an option. The HP ZBook Firefly 14 G8 is a compact workstation that has a quiet cooling solution and a silent keyboard. It has decent Intel Tiger Lake-UP3 CPU options, and you need a dedicated GPU, there is an NVIDIA Quadro T500 option. The notebook is compact, light, and well-built. At the same time, it has a decent I/O, great touchpad and keyboard, and you can choose between five display variants including touch screen panels.

HP ZBook Firefly 14 G8, i7-1185G7

HP has been known for designing lightweight, powerhouse workstations and the latest HP ZBook Firefly G8 simply complies to that. This 14-inch mobile workstation is another Zbook meant for those who wish to push their mobile workstations to the limits. Whether it is to write documents or to run graphics heavy programs or even to connect to a 5G network, the ZBook Firefly can do all of it with ease. In terms of its design, the ZBook has an angular, aerodynamic curbside appeal to it. Despite being lightweight, the Firefly G8 is sturdy and has passed several MIL-SPEC tests for drops and spills. As for its overall appearance, this ZBook is lightly coated with a silvery gray hue with a simple yet stylish chrome Z logo on the lid.

While laptops were often meant to open quickly so that one can get right to work, usually it is not the case with most devices. However, HP is living true to that statement by acquiring an angular design that creates a lovely groove for the lid to be easily opened. When opened, there is a 14-inch display surrounded by a thin plastic bezel. In addition, there is an IR webcam which has been equipped with a manual security shutter and is placed in the center above the display and is hidden within the bezel.

As for the keyboard, this model comes with a black Chiclet-style backlit keyboard with letters displayed in a clean white font. Apart from that, it should be noted that there is a track nub between the G, H, and B keys. The touchpad is situated beneath the keyboard and is slightly left of center and comes with two very clicky buttons above it. There is also a fingerprint reader to keep the files and data secure, placed just below the keyboard, on the right. In terms of its ports and connectivity, the ZBook Firefly 14 G8 has a 3.5 combo headphone/microphone port and two USB Type-A 5Gbps ports for fast charging and data transfers on the left, while there is a power connection port, an HDMI 2.0 port, two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, and a Sim card slot for 5G connectivity on the right of the laptop.

As for its display, this model has been equipped with 1920 x 1080-pixel 14-inches DreamColor display which is both colour-accurate and vivid. In terms of its performance, the Firefly 14 G8 carries an Intel Core i7-1185G7 CPU with 32GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD along with the Nvidia Quadro T500 GPU which can run games but was never meant to turn the ZBook into a proper gaming machine. As for the battery, this laptop will outlast an average 8-hour workday need easily. Overall, it is a great device to be explored, depending on the need and preference of the users.

The HP ZBook Firefly 14 G8 is a powerhouse packed in a small floor plan. I can see the G8 being purchased and deployed to employees as their main work from home laptop. There is more than enough power for some intensive tasks, and the small footprint is excellent for portability and space savings. The 720p webcam is a disappointment, and our 250 nits display isn’t the right choice. I think the sweet spot for this laptop is the HP 500 nits Dreamcolor display. The speakers are also weak, but this is an ultrabook, after all. We think the HP ZBook Firefly 14 G8 should be on your shortlist when considering high-performance ultrabooks.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA T500 Laptop GPU: Entry level dedicated graphics card for professional laptops based on the consumer GeForce MX450 with 896 shaders and a 64 bit memory bus. Therefore it uses the Turing architecture without raytracing and Tensor cores. Sometimes also called Quadro T500.

Intel Iris Xe G7 80EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G7 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 80 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.

i7-1165G7: An upper mid-range, quad-core processor of Tiger Lake product family. The i7 is designed for use in ultra-light (yet actively cooled) laptops; it is manufactured on Intel's third-gen 10 nm process marketed as SuperFin. The CPU cores run at 2.8 GHz (base clock speed @ 28 W TDP) to 4.7 GHz (single-core Boost frequency). This i7 features the 96 EU Intel Iris Xe G7 iGPU; it was the second-fastest CPU of TGL-UP3 line-up when Intel initially launched the series in 2020.

i7-1185G7: Tiger Lake based low power quad-core processor for thin and light laptops. The four cores clock around 3 - 4.8 GHz. Produced on the second-gen 10 nm Intel process.

i5-1135G7: A quad-core, mid-range processor of Tiger Lake product family designed for use in ultra-light laptops. The i5 is manufactured on Intel's second-gen 10 nm process marketed as SuperFin and features an 80 EU Iris Xe G7 iGPU. Core i5-1135G7 has a base clock speed of 2.4 GHz as long as it is allowed to consume 28 watts.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
