Shopping for a laptop under $600 is a bit like going for the half-priced, late-afternoon sushi special at your local deli--there's a certain risk versus reward calculation that has to occur. While it's not going to win any awards for flair or style, this anonymous-looking 15-inch retail model from HP offers the best combination of features and performance in its price range. The $599 HP G60-235DX has a 16:9 display, an Intel Dual-Core CPU (many budget systems use slower AMD chips), and even squeezes in a separate number pad. HP's anonymous-looking G60-235DX is one of the better overall values you'll find on retail-store shelves for under $600.

The HP G60-125NR is one of only a couple of laptops we've seen with a 15.6-inch display. We're seeing more and more 16:9 displays all the time (changing over from 16:10 aspect ratios), but these displays are usually 16 and 18 inches in size. Besides the cinematic display (and a rare separate number pad on a midsized system), there's unfortunately little to recommend about the AMD-powered G60. If you need a 16:9 display in a small 15-inch format, there are cheaper and more powerful choices than HP's G60-125NR.

On the outside, there's nothing to distinguish the HP G60-443CL ($649.99 list at Costco) from its nearly identical twin, the G60-441US. Both systems look exactly alike and offer bright 15.6-inch displays, draft n wireless networking, a big hard drive, and an HDMI port. The G60-443CL may be a bit more expensive than the G60-441US, but you get more for your money, including an extra GB of memory, a 64-bit operating system, and an extra year of warranty coverage, courtesy of Costco. The HP G60-443CL is an affordable mainstream notebook featuring a bright 15.6-inch screen and a decent feature set. You won't get blazing performance from this notebook, but it'll handle your everyday workload and comes with a two year warranty courtesy of Costco.70

Once you take their price tags off, you can't tell the HP G60-530us from the G60-533cl without a screwdriver, or at least not without hitting the Start menu, right-clicking on Computer, and clicking Properties. (The 530us has 3GB of memory while the 533cl runs 4GB.) That didn't affect HP's choice of operating system—both laptops use the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. It didn't affect performance as we thought it might—the pair finished in a virtual tie in most of our benchmark tests. This 15.6-inch laptop offers a bright screen and likable keyboard, and adequate performance and battery life.

We're the first to admit we've been spoiled. Not all that long ago, any well-equipped laptop for $649.99 was sure to earn a thumbs-up. Back in July, we said that Costco's HP G60-443CL gave you a lot for your money. The 15.6-inch HP G60-533cl offers few frills but appealing features, though the laptop's $650 price isn't the bargain it was a few months ago.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
T3200: Entry-level dual core processor with a slow performance due to the old Merom core and a small level 2 cache.
T4300:
Entry - middle class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
