Introduced in 1998, the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button on Google Search's homepage was meant to showcase the search engine. It would take users to the top-ranked webpage, bypassing the results screen.
In 2012, Google changed the functionality of the button. Hovering over it would display more expressions like "I'm Feeling Adventurous" or "I'm Feeling Puzzled", and redirect you to one of Google's services, essentially serving as an advertisement for the whole platform.
Now it looks like Google wants to replace the button entirely with everyone's favorite buzzword these days - "AI Mode."
As reported by The Verge, users on X and Threads have been posting screenshots of the new button on their homepage. Clicking on the new button will open a conversation with a chatbot to help you find what you're looking for.
Google seems to be testing not only replacing the old button but also the positioning of the new one. Some users have reported seeing the AI Mode button next to the voice and image icons in the search bar, while it replaces the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button for some.
The company is also testing variations of the new button, with some users being shown an animated border around AI Mode. Google spokesperson Ashley Thompson confirmed to The Verge that the new button is in limited testing for select users in the US, and restricted to ones who have signed up for the company's experimental labs.
