Google has received a fair share of backlash after forcefully updating the Pixel 6a, which halves the charging capacity of the phone. Per the company, this decision was made to mitigate potential risks surrounding the device's battery. Google pulled a similar move with the Pixel 4a, and it seems that the widespread battery problems have expanded past the A series.
A fresh round of reports suggests that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro users are facing a concerning battery swelling issue. These users report that the problem is causing the screen to detach from the housing, and this could eventually lead to an explosion or fire.
Some even report that their Pixel 7 phones have become unusable after the battery swelled, with one noting that their phone "gets switched off even on full charge." Forum comments about the issue suggest that the users have contacted the company, but it seems Google's support teams are not smoothly handling it.
As one user reports, the swelling got so bad that they were quoted by a repair shop for a screen replacement alongside the battery replacement. Google is apparently offering reimbursement for a third-party battery replacement, but not for any additional repair required for the swelling.
It's also worth noting that Google clarified that it would only offer a refund for the battery replacement if it is done through an authorized repair center and the user had a valid receipt. As of now, it seems that the company hasn't provided any "appeasement options" for those who don't have access to an authorized repair shop.
While this Pixel 7 series battery swelling problem appears to be widespread, Google has yet to issue an official statement about it. Affected users are recommended to follow the company's official guidelines and contact Google for support.
