Google Phone app on Android is about to get a new feature called "Lookup." It was spotted on beta version 127.0.620688474, and it mainly aims to help you identify unknown callers. But it's not a replacement for Truecaller, which is a phonebook app with a built-in Caller ID search function.
For those wondering, the Caller ID feature on Truecaller can show the incoming caller's name, location, and other related information. Of course, all this info about the incoming needs to be on Truecaller's database, which the app collects from its opted-in users, community, and social media. The "Lookup" feature on the Google Phone app, on the other hand, works differently.
It doesn't show you any info about the incoming call before you receive it. Instead, it lets you do a quick search after the call with apps that can handle web searches. Yes, this is something that you can manually do by copying and pasting the number into a browser. So, the new feature of the Google phone app on Android is basically saving you from a few steps.
On that note, you are less likely to get information on personal phone numbers on Google. This means the "Lookup" feature is mainly there to help identify businesses that have their contact details indexed on the search engine. So, Android apps like Truecaller won't be affected by this new feature.
As for when Google will launch the feature on the stable version of its Phone app, it's apparently been available in Japan since last month, and it could see a global rollout next month.
