The Gigabyte U2142 Ultarbook convertible is a well-built device with a great keyboard. The plentiful ports are a major highlight of the U2142 — it’s nice not to have to juggle between three USB devices when you’ve only got two ports (like on all too many Ultrabooks). Two full-size output options (HDMI and VGA) make it easy to use two external displays (along with the built-in display if you’d like) for serious desktop productivity. Performance is spot on in the U2142 and RAM is easily upgradable to extend unit life, thanks to a quick access hatch on the bottom of the device. Battery life is lower than some other options out there, but keep in mind that this is an 11.6-inch unit with a 40Wh battery.

The build quality on the U2142 is impressive — not unusual for Gigabtye. The whole unit feels very solid, and the clever combination of brushed metal and plastic makes the U2142 feel premium even though it starts under $1000.

Conservative. A twist-and-tilt hinge, a matte display, large input devices and a Pentium processor - this doesn't sound like a truly exciting combination. But the manufacturer manages to combine this traditional approach with a slim, sleek chassis. So does Gigabyte stand a chance against the many competing sliders and convertibles?

70.5%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
