GeForce GTX 2080 emerges on eBay for US$360 with performance rivaling the RTX 2080

Fancy yourself a never-released GeForce GTX 2080? Reddit user ascendance22 has managed to buy one from eBay. The card, which is currently selling for around US$360, appears to look identical to the regular RTX 2080 with the same cooler design and backplate. But it doesn’t have the RTX 2080 moniker on the front. The card also has the “GeForce GTX” label printed on the frame rather than the usual “GeForce RTX”.

What is this GPU exactly? Upon testing the card with GPU-Z, the tool labeled the GTX 2080 the “NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080”. As such the specs are identical. Based on the TU104 chip, the GTX 2080 matches its RTX-twin in clock speeds, memory size, and almost everything else.

The Redditor has also benchmarked the board to give us an estimation of the GPU’s performance. In 3DMark TimeSpy, the GTX 2080 managed a graphics score of 11,706. The score is slightly less than the RTX 2080. The slight reduction in TimeSpy performance maybe due to a CPU bottleneck, as the user paired the board with an Intel Core i3-12100F.

What’s more interesting, however, is that despite the “GTX” branding, the GPU does raytracing quite well.

All in all, the GTX 2080 looks like a prototype RTX 2080. It may even be an indication that Nvidia was thinking about retaining the GTX moniker but ultimately scrapped the plan in favor of the “RTX” branding. Alas, we’ll never know for certain.
