The Amilo is neatly designed in silver, with a black trim around the edges. The edges of the unit are tapered, giving it a streamlined appearance and making it easy to slip into a bag.

The latest addition to the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo range of notebooks is the small, elegant Si1520 which, despite its small, thin and light design, packs quite a punch due to the dual core processor at its heart. Stylishly finished in silver and black, the Amilo Si1520 weighs just 2.25kg including the small power adapter, and its small size (299 x 220 x 23.9mm) means it can be carried around without effort. This is a stylish, highly portable notebook with a good performance and some decent connectivity options, but it would be nice to see a bit more life from the battery.

The Amilo series is Fujitsu Siemens' line of 'value' home computers. While it might not be a powerful beast, the Amilo Si 1520 can certainly cope with most programs that are thrown at it, particularly given its slim looks and light weight. The core of the computer is an Intel Core Duo T2300 processor which runs at 1.66GHz, with an on-the-small-side 512Mb of memory. That's roughly in the middle of the Core Duo range, and while it means that the computer won't be able to deal with recent games at high levels of details, it's quite happy with office applications and web browsing. It's not suitable for anyone who wants an all-round entertainment and office PC, but for people who need to work or browse the internet on the move, the Amilo Si 1520 is a very good buy.

For notebooks with Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors, clock speeds below 2GHz have until now been the order of the day, certainly at the cheaper end of the market. Most of the faster processors are in the bulkier desktop replacements above the £800 mark. Good performance and lots of features from a decently priced notebook

One of the recent trends in notebook computers has been for manufacturers to distinguish their products not just through the specifications but through the design as well. That's led to all sorts of outlandish designs as well as tie-ins with car manufacturers to produce garishly coloured computers. Fujitsu Siemens has largely stayed away from such frivolity, concerning itself with producing good computers at good prices. However, the Amilo Si 2636 represents a step in the direction of style – it's moderately outlandish, if such a thing is possible. In fact, it's fairly normal in design except for the bright red metallic trim along both sides and the front. Other than that, and the fact that the bottom of the screen tapers inwards slightly on both sides for a pleasing curved effect, it's pretty standard, with a gloss black cover and grey-black styling elsewhere.

The Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Si 2636 is an amazing notebook and at the asking price is one of the most affordable machines to date. In terms of usability, this is a great machine and a pleasure to use. Sure, it’s not the thinnest or lightest machine on the market but it’s mix of performance, battery life and all-round usability makes it one of the most appealing lightweight machines we’ve seen in a long time.

For a laptop costing just £587, the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Si2636 is an enticing proposition, both on paper, and in the flesh. The few ergonomic complaints keep it from attaining true greatness however, and with Samsung's gorgeous Q70 available for just £612, the Fujitsu Siemens has got some serious competition. But, if you can live without the Q70's dedicated graphics, there's no arguing that the Si2636 provides an enviably long list of features at a surprisingly short price. Good looks, a Penryn processor and a long list of features, all for a bargain price.

Fujitsu-Siemens: Fujitsu, founded 1935, is a Japanese company specializing in semiconductors, air conditioners, computers (supercomputers, personal computers, servers), telecommunications, and services, and is headquartered in Tokyo. Fujitsu employs around 160,000 people and has 500 subsidiary companies. The partnership with Siemens AG was established in 1999 in the form of Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC), one of Europe's largest IT hardware suppliers, and owned 50/50 by Fujitsu and Siemens. 2009, this cooperation was terminated, FSC ended to exist. In future, no laptops will be sold with the brand "Fujitsu-Siemens" but only "Fujitsu".
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870: Higher clocked Mobilty Radeon HD 3850, also manufactured in 55 nm and with DirectX 10.1 support. The Avivo HD video engine helps the cpu in decoding HD videos.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T7500:
The Core 2 Duo T7500 is a Merom based Core 2 Duo with 4MB Level 2 Cache. It is positioned in the middle class (in 2009) and performs on par with a modern P7550 or Turion II Ultra M640/M660.
T9400:
The T9400 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and basically a Core 2 Duo P9500 with a higher TDP of 35 Watt.
AMD Turion X2 Ultra: The AMD Turion X2 Ultra is part of the Puma platform and a mixture of the old K9 core (form the Turion 64 X2) and some parts of the K10 architecture (memorycontroller, hypertransport, crossbar switch from the Phenom). Because of the increased L2 cache ("Ultra" CPUs) and the improved memory controller, the performance increased a bit. Still a similar clocked Core 2 Duo is noticably faster.
ZM-86: Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo. The ZM-86 is the fastest CPU of the ZM series and a middle class CPU in 2008.
