EV battery repair price drops to $1,480 as CATL offers 48-hour fixes with mobile service

The world's largest EV battery maker has confirmed that it will scale its Ning repair network to 100 cities globally by the end of 2026, backed by robotic repair lines that CATL claims can cut, paint, and seal battery packs without human hands involved.

An EV battery pack in China can run an owner the equivalent of $14,800 to replace, often for damage as trivial as a dent or a gouge that would be a bumper respray on a combustion car.

CATL says its cell-to-pack repair process, which replaces individual damaged cells instead of the whole pack, brings that down tenfold to $1,480, a truly disruptive number for an industry that has trained owners and insurers to treat any meaningful battery damage as a total loss.

Repair times

Turnaround times are shrinking too. CATL's service centers are targeting 3-day fixes, while its fleet of electric repair trucks that can carry out 30 diagnostic routines and 50 repair procedures claims it can knock that down to 48 hours for roughly 90% of basic regular cases. CATL already has EV battery repair centers live in Norway and Istanbul, plus experience centers in Bangkok and Riyadh, layered on top of 1,376 franchised service points across 84 countries.

Model-agnostic EV battery repairs

In the US, the focus for now is on recycling rather than replacing individual cells. Redwood Materials of ex-Tesla JB Straubel, for instance, is built around it and can recover upwards of 95% of critical materials from dead packs or repurpose others for grid storage. CATL's bet is that most packs shouldn't reach Redwood's yard at all but should just get fixed on an individual cell level for as long as possible.

Given that it makes four out of ten battery packs worldwide, the global expansion of this repair model could make owning an EV much more attractive, together with the ever-increasing warranty length of new battery packs that are now hitting the mark that goes beyond the useful lifespan of the electric car itself. While previously the Ning repair network targeted vehicles with its own batteries, CATL now says that any EV battery can be serviced there, and it remains to be seen if and how it would deal with damaged Tesla battery packs.
