The Dell Latitude has been one of the benchmarks for the ultra-rugged laptops. In fact, it is one of the only few in this class. The other famous ones are Panasonic’s Toughbook series and Lenovo’s Thinkpad series . The Dell Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme is a 14-inch fully rugged notebook with enhanced graphics performance. The Latitude Rugged family has been trained and tested for some of the world’s toughest jobs and most hazardous environments. It is also claimed to be built smart and durable to ensure users never have to slow down. It is featuring intuitive hot swappable dual batteries and USB 3.0 Type-C connectivity. The laptop has a tough exterior. It is drop tested from 1.83 m (6 feet) for impact resistance and certified by IP-65 ingress protection to ensure no environment is too hazardous for this fully rugged notebook. The "6" means the device is completely protected against dust, and the "5" that it's also protected from low-pressure water jets from all directions. It features a durable, built-to-last chassis that has undergone extensive military-grade MIL-STD 810G testing that ensures the system can withstand real-world conditions. Besides that, it has QuadCool thermal management testing allows users to stay productive even in incredibly high temperatures. The Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme display supports both glove touch and a passive pen, so users can capture information in any setting. The laptop is an excellent machine, in terms of the built quality, as it is also waterproof and temperature proof. Now, the Latitude 7424 is not designed to the normal everyday consumers, but for enterprise users, such as the military. The laptop has an excellent bright screen, performance and great battery life. However, what lacks in the Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme is the touchpad and there are no Thunderbolt 3 ports. There is nothing thin about the Latitude 7424. The device is made in a matte-black magnesium alloy and plastic, with some steel reinforcement around the security-lock slot. It is a 14-inch laptop that weighs about 3,86 kg (8.5 pounds) and is also equipped with a full-width handle located on the front edge of the device. Like previous generations and all 5000 series, the Dell 5420 is aimed at the business users who are typically in the executive levels. With a bright 1080p display, a relatively slim chassis and a responsive touchpad. The Latitude 5420 addresses the biggest problems Dell has encountered in rugged laptops and it does so without sacrificing durability or performance, due to the military-grade strength and capable Core i7 CPUs. Also, the Latitude 5420 offers an all-day battery life, despite sporting a chassis that's thinner than those its rugged rivals. The laptop is relatively expensive, but it keeps important data safe, even under the harshest conditions. The laptop’s modular design allows users to customize to their needs. The laptop flaunts a 660 dollars touchscreen and packs a Core i7-8650U CPU, 16 gigabytes of RAM, a 512 gigabytes SSD and an AMD Radeon RX540 GPU. The Dell Latitude 5420 Rugged also comes with some useful extras, including the secondary 51 Wh battery, a second Ethernet port, a DisplayPort, and an IR camera. Last year Dell showed their new rugged range in London and as spring dawns one of their offerings arrives for me to give it the once over. Of course it will be in my office and the around surroundings and not as the early sample was in far flung places with very inhospitable conditions when things like battery life were truly life challenging.

The Dell Latitude 5420 Rugged isn’t for everyone, of course. With its rugged design and extra optional security features, this rugged laptop definitely has its uses for businesses that operate in non-office settings. Sturdily built and highly customizable when ordered, the Latitude 5420 Rugged is an excellent choice for working in harsher environments.
