Reviews for the Dell Inspiron 9400

Dell Inspiron 9400 Review

Overall, the 9400 is a good laptop. It tends to overheat alot when playing graphics intensive games like Oblivion, even though the GPU is underclocked. I think this is probably a problem most notebooks experience due to the small space the components are crammed in to. I wouldn’t buy a performance notebook again, purely for the fact that desktops are clearly better for gaming and upgradability. There are still hardly any ExpressCards available, whereas you can get PCMCIA versions of sound cards, TV cards and WiFi cards with external antenna connections. The IPW3945 WiFi card still isn’t fully supported under linux, and after hours of frustration I was ready to buy an earlier model and swap it with that. The only problem was that Intel decided to change the connection type from all previous IPW generations, meaning the whole concept of MiniPCI cards goes down the pan. Next time, I’d buy an Ultra portable such as the 123 Alienware Sentia which only weighs 2Kg, just over half the 3.6Kg of the 9400.

It was only a matter of time before Dell switched over to Intel’s Core Duo platform, offering the dual-core chip in its flagship Inspiron 9400 notebook. The Dell Inspiron 9400 is a great powerhouse of a machine that handles well and is extremely comfortable to use but we’re just a little concerned that you’re not getting the best for the price. If you want to get a real future-proof version of this notebook the price soars past £2000, which isn’t a great investment in our books.

Dell's latest attempt to have its piece of the Microsoft's Media Center Edition (MCE) pie lies with the Inspiron 9400. This dual-core laptop comes with an Intel T2500 (2GHz) processor and a total of 1GB dual-channel DDR2 Ram operating at a speedy 677MHz. Its Sysmark 2004SE score of 214 is quick and consistent to what we've seen with other dual-core notebooks, such as the Asus V6X00J. A PCmark05 result of 3,262 was also similar to the Asus but a fair way off the quickest notebook score of 5,293 clocked up by the gargantuan Rock Xtreme 64 earlier this year.

ATI Mobility Radeon X1400: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 is part of the lower middle class. The performance can be compared with an elder X600, but technically it is a X1300, which is scarcely 100 Mhz higher clocked.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

T2300: » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.10": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.6 kg:

Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.

Dell: Dell is a U.S. manufacturer (based in Texas) of computer hardware founded in 1984 and is one of the largest international manufacturers in terms of both market share and notebook models. Its product line includes desktops, notebooks, storage systems, monitors, servers, printers, consumer electronics and peripherals. Dell offers laptops that are suitable for various applications, such as business laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables and workstations. Dell's business laptops from the Latitude and Precision series are an option for professional users and businesses.

In 2023, Dell had an approximate 17% market share of global PC sales, ranking #3 after Lenovo and HP.

For gaming enthusiasts, Dell's Alienware brand is for gaming notebooks.

82.7%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
