The Ram Truck brand of Stellantis just introduced an electric 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger that is says will be capable of up to 690 miles of range on a charge. For comparison, Tesla's Cybertruck website promises "up to 500 miles" on a battery charge, though it doesn't make clear which trim will be capable of that top range and how much it would cost. How did Ram do it then?
Well, "on a charge" may not be the exact phrase here, as the 2025 Ramcharger will have a gas generator to kick in and power the electric drivetrain when the battery runs out after its planned 145-mile range. This would make the all-new Ramcharger a good tradeoff for those who are willing to pull the trigger on electric propulsion for their trucks, but suffer from a severe case of range anxiety.
"We know not every single customer is going to be ready for that," advised CEO Tim Kuniskis, and said that RAM expects EV adoption to "hockey-stick up fast when everything gets in place and all the vehicles are available and the infrastructure."
That is why the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is planned as a transitional vehicle between the gas-powered era with its 3.6L engine, and the EV future with its 92 kWh battery and 663HP electric powertrain. Acceleration is pegged at 4.4s which is plenty fast for a massive truck with 14,000 pounds of towing capacity and 2,625 lbs payload.
At a fast Level 3 charger, the battery will be able to take 50 miles of range in just 10 minutes, while electric outlets capable of delivering 4.8 kilowatts from the truck bed, and a 7.2 kW power panel option, will allow to operate various tools as needed.
Ram says that the towing and payload capacities of the new Ramcharger are the best in its class, and will be releasing its gas-powered electric pickup next year at a price yet to be determined.
