"The Legislature would be saying, 'If you don’t like our petroleum cars, well, we don’t like your electric cars,'" says a Wyoming state Senator about a largely symbolic resolution that looks to ban new EV sales by 2035. The move, according to the state's legislators, is meant to counter the federal EV adoption imposition and protect the local fossil fuel industry.

The state of Wyoming has become first with a draft resolution to actually ban new EV sales by 2035 in response to resolutions in states like California that ban vehicles with internal combustion engines in the same timeframe. That is the explanation of the local legislators who advanced the bill, with the argument that it is meant to protect the local fossil fuel industry and slow down the adoption of electrified transportation on account of the lack of charging infrastructure and environmental concerns.

The so-called "Phasing Out New Electric Vehicle Sales By 2035" proposal is sponsored by Republican state Sens. Brian Boner and Jim Anderson. "The Legislature would be saying, 'If you don’t like our petroleum cars, well, we don’t like your electric cars,'" said Anderson, as the draft adds environmental problems to the other arguments for phasing out new electric car sales like oil and gas industry job protection:

The critical minerals used in electric batteries are not easily recyclable or disposable, meaning that municipal landfills in Wyoming and elsewhere will be required to develop practices to dispose of these minerals in a safe and responsible manner.

Electric vehicles are "impractical" without widespread charging infrastructure that is currently lacking in the Cowboy State, while gas-powered vehicles remain crucial to the transportation of people and goods in the state, argues the resolution.

One of the bill's co-sponsors, Senator Brian Boner, said he realizes that the move is largely symbolic, but is willing to make a stand in the name of encouraging debate about the practicality of phasing out ICE cars by 2035. "I’m interested in making sure that the solutions that some folks want to the so-called climate crisis are actually practical in real life. I just don’t appreciate when other states try to force technology that isn’t ready," added Senator Boner.
