Chrome OS notebooks sporting VMWare View to be used by government employees

In the first of what could be many, the city of Orlando has decided to begin deploying Chromebooks for office use. However, the notebooks will not be limited to the browser based OS, and will instead be using 2nd-party software to enable access to a remote Windows environment.

The first of Google’s Chromebooks began shipping on the 15th of June, but this marks the first time the notebooks have been adopted for official use.  The City of Orlando is planning on supplying Chromebooks to their employees, where they will be used mainly in conjunction with Ericom Software’s new AccessNow client. The client allows access to VMware view (a virtual Windows environment hosted on a remote server) from any HTML5 capable browser, and is perfect for running Windows from a Chromebook.

Our objective was to be able to provide users with flexibility in accessing VMware View virtual desktops from any location. In fact, employees plan to take Chromebooks to meetings, use them while they work from home and on lunch breaks. Ericom’s AccessNow for VMware View provides a key connectivity component in empowering users to access vital resources from the Chromebooks.” said Marvin Smith, System Administrator of the City of Orlando.

The use of Chromebooks in the government and business sector definitely has an appeal, as the laptops start at only $350 and offer a reliable but simple computing experience. And while city employees may enjoy getting their hands on a new Chromebook, they might not take too kindly to the idea of having to work during their lunch breaks as well.
