New Bluetooth Core Specification version 6.0 introduces advanced features like Bluetooth Channel Sounding for precise distance measurement, Decision-Based Advertising Filtering for efficient scanning, and ISOAL Enhancement to reduce latency in audio streaming.

Bluetooth has long been a cornerstone of wireless communication, and its latest iteration, the Bluetooth Core Specification 6.0, introduces a whole new suite of advanced features focused on improving connectivity, precision, and security.

Version 6.0 builds on the capabilities of Bluetooth Low Energy (LE). One of the standout features is Bluetooth Channel Sounding, which enables highly accurate distance measurement between two devices. Unlike traditional methods that relied on signal strength (RSSI), this new approach uses two techniques: Phase-Based Ranging (PBR) and Round-Trip Timing (RTT). PBR utilizes the phase differences of signals to determine distance, while RTT measures the time it takes for a signal to travel to a device and back. These methods are far more precise, making it ideal for applications like keyless entry systems.

The graph illustrates that when the distance between two devices is relatively small, path loss calculations can yield reasonably good results. But over longer distances, a small signal strength variation can correspond to a large possible range of distances. (Image source: Bluetooth)

Another major upgrade is the Decision-Based Advertising Filtering (DBAF) feature, which upgrades scanning efficiency. Traditionally, scanning devices had to check all related packets, leading to unnecessary energy consumption and potential distractions. DBAF changes this by allowing devices to make decisions based on the content of the initial packet before scanning secondary channels. This results in faster, more efficient scanning, which is especially useful in environments with multiple devices advertising connections.

ISOAL (Isochronous Adaptation Layer) enhancement addresses latency and reliability issues in isochronous communication. Isochronous communication is essential for real-time audio streaming, and the new framing mode in version 6.0 reduces latency, ensuring smoother and more reliable audio transmission. Moreover, the LL (link layer) Extended Feature Set expands the range of features that devices can support, accommodating the growing complexity of Bluetooth LE applications. Consequently, devices possess the capability to communicate more effectively and provide a broader range of capabilities.

Lastly, the Frame Space Update introduces flexibility in the timing of packet transmissions, which was previously unchangeable. This negotiable frame spacing allows for better optimization of connection events, improving overall communication efficiency. Bluetooth further claims that version 6.0, like previous versions, will be regularly updated with new features and technical improvements.
