BYD has added another car-transporting vessel to its fleet, bringing the company’s exporting potential to over one million units per year. The news was shared on Weibo.
The BYD Jinan is the eighth ocean-going vessel to be commissioned by the Chinese EV maker. As it has become its practice, the transporter is named after another city in the eastern Shandong province, where BYD has a significant manufacturing footprint.
According to BYD, the latest commissioning might be the last for a while as there are no plans for immediate expansion.
While the company has not disclosed the carrying capacity of BYD Jinan, it revealed that it can now export more than one million cars every year. Three of its cargo ships can hold almost 10,000 vehicles, but most of the vessels can accommodate 7,000.
BYD’s vessel fleet includes BYD Explorer No. 1, BYD Hefei, BYD Changzhou, BYD Shenzhen which had its maiden voyage in April, BYD Xi’an, BYD Changsha, and BYD Zhengzhou.
BYD has had a busy year both locally and internationally. The automaker sold 373,626 vehicles in August alone, an 8.52 percent rise from July. More than 80,000 units were exported, more than double the figure for the same period last year. BYD has shipped 625,816 units year-to-date in 2025, representing a 136.27 percent increase year-over-year.
