Asus has revealed the latest entry in its K-series lineup of notebooks, and this model may be the largest one yet.
Called the Asus K93SV, this 18.4-inch desktop replacement sports some serious horsepower and customization. For example, the unit can be equipped with a Core i3-2310M, Core i5-2410M or Core i7-2630QM CPU and ships with four SODIMM RAM slots for up to 16GB. A discrete Nvidia GeForce GT 540M powers the fullHD LED backlit screen.
The most noteworthy feature, however, is the notebook's support for 3.5-inch HDDs. Users can outfit a standard desktop SATA drive into the notebook itself and even a secondary 2.5-inch drive if additional capacity is required. Of course, the notebook will still be able to run on a single 2.5-inch HDD if a 3.5-inch drive is not at hand. In total, the hefty K93SV will weigh in at over 4.11kg (9 pounds) with a thickness of 5.6cm (2.2 inches).
Otherwise, the connectivity options are the standard wireless-n, Bluetooth V3.0, 4x USB 2.0, Blu-Ray and HDMI-out. Unfortunately, USB 3.0 is nowhere to be found.
Still, the ability to support desktop-size drives should be the main attraction of the Asus K93SV. While the release date and price are still a mystery, here's hoping that more maufacturers will include 3.5-inch HDD bays into desktop replacement notebooks in the near future.
