Asus U56E notebook now available in the U.S.

The thin 15.6-inch Asus packs in a Sandy Bridge Core i5 CPU, 6GB RAM, USB 3.0 and WiMAX all for under $630

First announced earlier this month, the thin-and-light Asus U56E-BBL5 is now available for purchase in the U.S.

The 15.6-inch notebook comes in at just 1.1-inch thick and offers a 2.3GHz Core i5-2410M CPU, 6GB DDR3 RAM, a 640GB HDD, DVD burner, HDMI, 1x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0 and an Intel 4G WiMAX chipset. Unfortunately for gamers, the available model offers only integrated graphics. Oddly enough, the product page makes no mention of the 1366x768 resolution screen or even the expected runtime off of the 8-cell battery.

As for the chassis, the notebook includes a “Lake Blue” color style and a chiclet keyboard with numpad, totaling less than 5.5 pounds (2.49kg) in weight.

The 14-inch Asus U46, however, was announced alongside the U56 but is currently nowhere to be found. This particular model is expected to carry the same specifications but with an Nvidia GeForce GT 540M GPU instead.

The U56E-BBL5 can be ordered now from Best Buy for $630 with the standard 1-year limited warranty. As of this writing, the unit is currently in backorder status and is expected to ship within the next 1-2 weeks.

There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s.
