Asus launches Eee PC netbooks with Ubuntu 10.10

The Asus Eee PC lineup has been quite supportive of operating systems outside of Windows, such as with the recently announced X101 with MeeGo OS. The trend continues as Asus has now announced not one, but three new Eee PCs preloaded with the popular Linux-based Ubuntu OS.

The three netbooks, known as the 1001PXD, 1011PX and the 1015PX, are all quite similar in specs and size. In fact, the 1011PX and 1015PX have already been announced since earlier last month, but without Ubuntu support out of the box.  Each netbook will come with a 10.1-inch LED 1024x600 resolution display, Intel Atom N455 or N570 CPU, 1GB DDR3 RAM, Bluetooth V2.1 or V3.0, 0.3MP webcam, VGA-out, USB 2.0, and a 3-in-1 card reader. Expect each netbook to weigh in at 1.1kg each

Probably the most major difference between these laptops is the battery life difference, as the 1001PXD can run for up to 8 hours on its 6-cell battery, while the 1011PX and 1015PX can squeeze up to 11 hours from their own respective 6-cell batteries.

The Eee PC with Ubuntu is ideal for consumers and businesses,” said Asus in its press release. While all three netbooks will come preinstalled with Windows 7 Starter, each will apparently have the option to choose Ubuntu 10.10 at startup. Of course, users are always welcomed to download the OS anytime for free at the official Ubuntu website.

The 1001PXD, 1011PX and 1015PX have been available through Asus sales channels since June 1st.
