The ZenBook S (UX391) is a particularly light 13.3-inch laptop from Asus. It tips the scale at just 1 kg, but the manufacturer says the performance is not affected. We review the rival for the XPS 13.

Although the Asus ZenBook S is speedy enough to satisfy, and it looks the absolute business, there are too many flaws to recommend it, including a disappointing screen and some serious thermal issues.

If you’re in the market for a traditional Windows laptop that won’t weigh you down, the ZenBook S is a solid choice. Despite its small size, it has enough power for most tasks. Battery life is a letdown, but the S is still a good option unless you need to be unplugged for a full workday at a time.

Since ASUS’ refreshed ZenBook line is headlined by key features like crazy thin bezels, Ergolift hinges, and ScreenPads, it’s not surprising that their premium ultrabook line, the ZenBook S (UX391) gets some of that love too.

The Zenbook S doesn’t have the wow factor of Asus’ other Computex releases, but from what I’ve seen it looks like a solid, ultraportable Macbook rival.

The Asus ZenBook S isn’t the world’s thinnest, most affordable or even a 100% uniquely designed laptop, but it still looks like the Ultrabook to treat yourself with right now.

Inside, the ZenBook S is packing some pretty premium specs in that thin body, including a 13.3-inch 4K display, Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD on the top-of-the-line model.

If this is all sounding like it’s worth a closer look, there’s an extensive where to buy list on the Asus website. Some of the lower-end models are available from places like Mwave and JB Hi-Fi, but if you’re looking at the higher end, the options are a little less. Best to start on somewhere like Amazon or Google Shopping and find the best deals.

The ZenBook UX391UA is one of the best 13-inch ultraportables on the market right now. It's thin, light, ergonomic and performs flawlessly, which is truly surprising given the size. This model builds on the previous ZenBooks and addresses most of their issues, so as long as you can live with Thunderbolt 3 only IO and don't need all-day battery life, this might suit you very well, especially since I expect it to be competitively priced in most regions. Read on for the whole story.
