The Asus VivoBook X202E is an 11.6-inch touchscreen laptop that sells for roughly £400. Inside the VivoBook X202E's pleasing exterior with its varied connectivity hides a computer with too low processing power to compete with ultrabooks and other laptops that carry an Intel Core i3. The X202E is more comparable to a netbook with a small battery and a mediocre display.

If you’re in the market for a portable notebook with Windows 8 and a touchscreen display, the Asus VivoBook X202E is one of the cheapest options available, at $530 and up. But despite the relatively low price, it’s a pretty decent laptop which offers acceptable performance, a decent keyboard, and a rather attractive case design.

The Asus VivoBook x202 is unique, in that it's the perfect notebook for a very specific demographic: the demographic that wants a small, portable, touchscreen laptop for a relatively cheap price. The VivoBook is just £459, which makes it about half the price of an Ultrabook or a MacBook Air. Since there aren't a ton of ultraportable options at this price point, the VivoBook does have a niche to fill. So, if you're looking for a notebook that you can pop into your purse--and you definitely don't want a tablet--the VivoBook might be worth a look.

The VivoBook X202E certainly isn't without shortcomings. Those who frequently task their laptops with CPU-taxing workloads like video editing and bulk crunching of high-resolution still images should look for a system with a more powerful Core i5 or i7 processor. And those who need long battery life should likewise look for something else.

The new range of hybrid tablets and touchable laptops on the market now may offer better performance and battery life, but the Asus VivoBook X202E-DH31T puts touch capability into an affordable price range, which may make it worthwhile despite the flaws. Compared to other 10- to 12-inch touch-capable Windows 8 laptops, it’s cheap and usable, if not as portable and powerful as leading systems, like the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13.

I love the idea of touch-screen Windows 8 laptops dipping down close to $500. There are trade-offs to be sure, in processing power, input device quality, and battery life, and spending another $150 to $200 could make a big difference. But as far as $550 Windows 8 laptops go, the X202E is portable and useful, and worth a look for budget shoppers.

This entry-level ASUS VivoBook X202E-DH31T provides a solid Windows 8 touch experience in a lightweight design for a tempting $549. Unfortunately, you'll need to bring the power cord with you, as this ultraportable is seriously lacking in battery life. While we don't recommend it either, at least the Acer Aspire V5-571, which also costs $549, offers a more powerful Core i5 processor.

If you're on the market for a portable alternative to ultrabooks or tablets, the Asus VivoBook X202E-BH91T-CB is, for the most part, a good choice thanks to its touchscreen, diminutive chassis, and affordable price tag. It is, however, clearly designed to handle basic computing tasks, and users interested in anything beyond that should think twice before taking the plunge.
