If you’re after more freedom in customizing your character than Diablo usually provides, Torchlight 2 might be just what you need. It’s currently 80% off on Steam, bringing the price down to $3.99.

Released in September 2012 by Runic Games and published by Arc Games, Torchlight II is almost retro by now, yet it still has strong appeal for fans of classic action RPGs – especially those who enjoy deep character customization. Building on the story of its predecessor, the game follows a new hero tasked with stopping a deranged alchemist. Consumed by the power of a dragon’s heart, the alchemist seeks to destroy the city of Torchlight. Players pursue him across multiple acts, determined to uncover the dark secrets behind his actions and put an end to his plans.

Torchlight II delivers the kind of gameplay fans of classic action RPGs like Diablo will instantly recognize – fast-paced combat, procedurally generated dungeons and a constant flow of loot. Players can choose from four distinct classes, each with three talent trees supporting different playstyles. Pets also play a central role, helping in combat and even selling items while you continue exploring. The open world comes with dynamic weather and a day-night cycle, adding variety to the experience. With co-op support for up to six players, the adventure becomes even more engaging when shared with friends.

The German gaming magazine GameStar described Torchlight II as something of an "anti-Diablo", emphasizing how it addresses one of the key shortcomings of Blizzard’s iconic series. While Diablo leans toward accessibility and a more streamlined progression system, Arc Games’ action RPG offers far greater freedom in character development. Players can freely allocate attributes and skills, enabling highly personalized builds and a deeper level of strategic customization.

GameStar praised Torchlight II for its enjoyable gameplay flow, solid challenge on higher difficulty levels and charming comic-style visuals. The presentation, however, was considered somewhat underwhelming, and the quest design lacked innovation. Despite these minor shortcomings, the game received a strong score of 85 out of 100. Player reception has been equally positive: Torchlight II holds a 92% approval rating on Steam based on roughly 44,500 reviews. On Metacritic, it earned a Metascore of 88 from critics and a User Score of 8.4. Steam lists the game as “Playable” on the Steam Deck (available on Amazon for $465).

80% discount on Steam

Torchlight II is normally priced at around $20 on Steam, but it’s currently available at an 80% discount until September 1, bringing the cost down to $3.99. According to SteamDB, this matches the game’s previous lowest price. While it’s a solid deal, it’s worth noting that Torchlight II has often been available at this price point in the past.
