Reviews for the Alienware Sentia m3200

76% Alienware scores big with first ultraportable laptop
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
Alienware's smallest notebook yet, the Sentia m3200, offers a bright 12.1-inch wide-screen display, a good case design, and zippy performance. Only its slightly disappointing keyboard should give you pause. (That and maybe the big alien head on the lid.) Using a 2-GHz Pentium M 760 processor and 1GB of RAM, the Sentia earned an impressive WorldBench 5 score of 92, placing in the top four of our current group of ultraportables. At $1525 (as of 2/16/06), our test unit included an 80GB hard drive; however, the 4.8-pound Sentia m3200 beats most thin-and-light competitors with the option of a capacious 160GB drive, which costs $298 more than the drive in our configuration.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip with shared memory on Mobile Intel 915GM chipset. It is the predecessor of Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The performance can be compared with the Mobile Radeon 9000 (with a 64 bit memory bus).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Pentium M: With Intel chip set (855 or 915) and Intel WLAN also available with the name Centrino (name for the package).
In the comparison very fast per megahertz and very modest with weaknesses in floating point operations.
It is also available as a low voltage version with very small current consumption.

This range of display format is largely the upper limit for tablets and the lower limit for subnotebooks.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small in size and therefore easily portable. The tiny display has the added advantage of requiring little power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is exhausting for the eyes. High resolutions, which one is used to from a standard laptop, are almost not usable.

The same applies to tablets in this size range.

Alienware: Alienware was founded in the USA in 1996. The European headquarters is located in Ireland. Alienware has been part of the Dell Group since 2006. The product range mainly focuses on gaming laptops and desktops, which are developed and manufactured by Dell. The trademark is a slightly futuristic design with an Alien as the logo. Additionally, workstations for private and business customers are sold.

As with every brand, there are also some points of criticism with Alienware. Some customers have complained about the high prices of the products, while others have criticized the quality of customer services. There have also been some reports of problems with the reliability and durability of some Alienware products. However, many customers have also had positive experiences with the brand and appreciate the powerful gaming computers.

76%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
