The Falconeer is the creation of Dutch solo developer Tomas Sala and was first released by Wired Productions on November 10, 2020. Now, nearly five years later, Sala has given the game a major overhaul with The Falconeer: Revolution. Featuring enhanced lighting, improved water and weather systems, a streamlined interface, and gameplay upgrades such as auto-targeting, refined controls, and more responsive flight mechanics, the remaster injects fresh energy into the aerial combat experience.
In The Falconeer: Revolution, players soar through the skies as a giant, weaponized falcon, engaging in spectacular aerial battles against pirates, rival factions, and monstrous creatures above the vast world of Ursee. The sensation of flight – defined by smooth glides, sharp dives, and agile dodges – is one of the game’s standout features. Intense dogfights are balanced by tranquil moments of exploration over Ursee’s endless oceans. As PC Gamer put it, the game strikes “a great balance between peaceful flying and thrilling combat.”
The outlet reviewed the original version of The Falconeer – before the remaster’s upgrades – and gave it a solid 76 out of 100. The review praised the game’s excellent sense of flight, striking visuals, and arcade-style aerial combat. However, it also noted a few drawbacks, such as frustratingly distant save points and a navigation system that could be difficult to follow.
The ratings on Metacritic tell a more mixed story, with a Metascore of 65 and a User Score of 5.0 – falling short of PC Gamer’s more favorable verdict. Much of the criticism dates back to the game’s initial release, when it didn’t quite live up to expectations as a next-gen showcase for the Xbox Series X/S. The Steam community, however, has been more supportive: 77% of over 500 user reviews are positive. The Falconeer: Revolution is also marked as “Verified” for the Steam Deck (available at Amazon for around $440), meaning it runs smoothly on the handheld and can be played on the go without issues.
Free weekend on Steam
On Steam, The Falconeer: Revolution is usually priced at around $20, but it’s free to play until November 10. According to developer Tomas Sala, the goal of the promotion is to gather feedback on the updated version and increase the game’s visibility. Players who wish to continue after the free weekend can carry over their progress and jump straight into the full version.
