The first Predator laptop with a 14-inch screen is like a business laptop in disguise. It's this discreetness that'll be its make-or-break appeal for many. But don't let the subtleties fool you: there are the cooling vents, the Turbo button, the high-end innards and all the goodness that you're likely to want from a gaming laptop. Just wrapped up into a different package to the norm.

One downside of an otherwise impressive laptop is the amount of bloatware, including free trials for security software and a VPN. It’s an annoyance, because you’ll need to spend quite a bit of time uninstalling it all. The Acer Predator Triton 300 SE will be a pleasant surprise for budget-minded gamers who thought RTX-powered laptops were out of reach. Affordably priced, slim, light, and powerful, the Triton 300 SE can hang with the ray-tracing crowd even if it can’t scale the visual heights of RTX 3080–enabled systems. Toss in Thunderbolt 4, RGB keyboard backlighting, and solid battery life, and you have a good value in gaming laptops.

If you’re looking for a thin, sleek-looking gaming laptop with decent specifications and performance without breaking the bank, the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE warrants your consideration. Battery life aside, this gaming laptop was an easy one to hand out a Top Pick of 2021 Award to here at Techaeris.

I like a lot of things about the Triton 300 SE. I’m a big fan of 14-inch notebooks like this in general, and I think that going with a 144Hz display at 1080p was a good choice, given the internals. I think the laptop looks excellent – I like it even more than the Zephyrus G14 – and it offers good gaming performance for its size. Still, Acer faces stiff competition around this price point (this model has an MSRP of $1,499.99), not only in terms of specifications but also in battery life and design. So while I can’t emphatically say that the Triton 300 SE is heads and shoulders above something like Zephyrus G14 or the Razer Blade, it’s certainly good enough to be considered alongside those notebooks if you’re in the market for a 14-inch gaming laptop.

Value for money is the Acer Predator Triton 300SE’s strong suit. You really are getting a lot of capability and quality for your money here, including the ability to play serious games on a machine you can easily throw in a backpack and use in the office. I’d have liked to see the option to add another SSD, and the sound system could be improved, but these are more quibbles than serious criticisms. Like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, the Acer Predator Triton 300SE successfully walks the line between dedicated ultrabooks and more games-focused laptops. The advantage the Acer machine holds is that it is £200 cheaper.

If you approach the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE (i7-11375H+RTX 3060) from an ultra-mobility gaming computer, the objective gaming metrics like “performance per Lbs” are excellent. Acer is using an aggressive but stable thermal management in addition to a sophisticated cooling system. That’s the likely reason for the higher performance than similar laptops we’ve looked at in the past. If you need heavy CPU performance for video-editing or offline 3D rendering, perhaps something with more cores like the Acer Concept 3D could be interesting. When it comes to ultra-mobility gaming, we give high marks to the Acer’s Predator Triton 300 SE as it performed even better than we hoped.

The $1,400 Acer Predator Triton 300 SE uses the Intel Core i7-11375H, a "special edition" -- "SE," get it? -- of its 35-watt i7-11370H sibling. It supports Intel Turbo Boost 3.0, which potentially allows the CPU to attain a peak single-core frequency of 5GHz compared to 4.8GHz for the not-so-special part. That's all great on paper, but ultimately, while it's a solid Triton gaming laptop with nicer looks than the rest of its family, you don't gain any noticeable advantages from the special CPU.

It’s tough to beat something like the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE when it is priced at just $1,399. With this Acer, you get a powerful CPU and GPU as well as a decent battery life and vibrant display packed into a slim 0.7-inch chassis. However, the quiet speakers and keyboard experience may be a deal breaker for some.

It was daring of Acer to jump into the ring against Asus’ Zephyrus G14, a gaming laptop that ticks a lot of boxes (aside from the missing webcam) for the price. This is a more elegant-looking machine than the G14, and compared directly, it’s hard to not appreciate its Thunderbolt 4 port and a webcam. It’s also a capable performer with games. But Asus proved that a gaming laptop can be more than just a powerful machine. It can also have good battery life for portable use and competent build quality without a bunch of bloatware. The competition is fierce, but the Triton 300 SE is more like prey than a bonafide Predator.

This is a powerful Notebook which at the time of setup you can have as Windows 10 or Windows 11. I choose Windows 10 and after the normal 15 minutes’ worth of questions answered was able to use the machine, as usual there are a number of updates to do to bring it right up to date. So after a few days having done all the updates I expected to be offered the chance to upgrade and as I was not I restored it and this time I choose Windows 11.

The Acer Triton 300 SE is a great gaming laptop for someone who also needs something portable they can realistically carry around most days. Battery life is solid for light work. The 1.7kg weight may not be light as such, but it's much lighter than the gaming laptop norm. The Acer is also a bit cheaper than the Asus Zephyrus G14, which set the standard for this genre of laptop back in 2020. So now there's much more competition to consider. A couple of design elements look ever-so-slightly dated, though, sticking out in an otherwise very '2021' style of laptop. The Triton 300 SE also runs hot and loud when you max-out its gaming performance. But you know what? At this price point it's a bit of a badass, particularly when you can pay a similar amount for a laptop with no real gaming skills, and end up with less SSD storage too.

First, we have to give Acer some credit for having balls to enter the world of small-screen-size gaming computing. And more so, that they have figured a design that looks industrial and definitely not overwhelming. But undoubtedly, they have faced the expected problems like somewhat limited cooling capacity.

Most PC gamers may find upgrading their aged-old desktop computer a hassle, in order to meet the system requirements of the latest 3D games. Not to mention, it can also be very costly to do so, especially if the entire system has to be replaced. But instead of getting a brand new gaming desktop computer, one option is to go for the latest gaming laptop that not only lets you run the latest games, but is also portable enough to bring along with wherever you go. And like the name of its line of gaming-focused computer hardware, Taiwanese hardware and electronics company Acer has its eyes fixed on this market segment, like a Predator.

Acer's latest Predator Triton 300 SE is a strong contender, packing plenty of power and high-end features into a compact package at a price that doesn't go overboard. It comfortably holds its own against the 14-inch gaming rigs from Razer, Alienware, and Asus. There are differences, of course. While we praise the Triton's reasonable price as tested, the base model is a better value play at under $1,400 including the GeForce RTX 3060, if you can live without the dazzling OLED display. Other factors include the Acer's build quality, which is fine but a notch below its rivals'. Still, the Predator's negatives are a small price to pay for its gorgeous screen, good battery life, and Core i9 horsepower, so there's not much room for complaint. The new Triton 300 SE may not redefine 14-inch machines, as some of its competitors did, but it joins them near the head of the class.

The Acer Predator Triton 300 SE OLED has potential. It’s a compact yet powerful laptop with an excellent display and decent battery life. Pricing isn’t terrible, either, with an MSRP of $1,949. That’s not inexpensive, but it’s reasonable for a laptop with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB solid state drive. Graphics performance lets the laptop down, however. Nvidia’s RTX 3060 is a fine mid-range mobile graphics solution, but the Predator Triton 300 SE’s price puts it very close to premium territory. Even Alienware’s x14, which I tested at $1,999, managed to squeeze ahead, and the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 is just flat-out superior in games. The Predator Triton 300 SE OLED is a much better laptop for content creators than it is for gamers, even though it’s sold as a gaming machine. The Intel Core i9-12900H processor and vivid, color-accurate display make it great for those who want a compact Windows laptop for photo or video editing. If you just want to game, though, the Alienware x14 or Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 should prove a better choice.
