The Rampion offshore wind farm is surprisingly drawing tourists to the Sussex area in the UK. People are paying boat operators to take them closer to the towering structures, which they describe as photogenic.

One of the sentiments against offshore wind farms is that they ruin the view. However, growing evidence shows that many people find the giant structures attractive and will pay for a closer view. As the BBC reports, some British boat operators have been capitalizing on this new form of tourism.

The Rampion wind farm, 8.2 miles off the Sussex coast in the UK, contains 116 wind turbines, each towering 140 m. Since its opening in 2018, it has supplied clean energy to 350,000 British homes yearly. Now, it is boosting local tourism, and some people find the turbines photogenic.

According to Dr Adam Jones, a lecturer of strategy and marketing at the nearby University of Brighton, one of the key drivers of the growing wind farm tourism trade is the increasing popularity of staycations. People are seeking alternative spots and backdrops that are TikTok or Instagram-worthy closer to home.

Dr Jones pointed out that the biggest beneficiaries of the tourism boom were local fishermen, not the big tour companies. He claims small and medium-sized businesses better spread such economic opportunities. One such business, Brighton Diver, has been arranging tours since the farm was being built. Paul Dyer, the owner of the travel agency, said his tours have been “surprisingly popular” with locals.

The Rampion wind farm is set for expansion. Plans to add 90 turbines, up to 325 m in height, have been approved.
