Intel Core i5-6260U vs AMD A6 Pro-7050B vs Intel Core i5-6198DU

Intel Core i5-6260U

► remove from comparison Intel 6260U

The Intel Core i5-6260U is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core SoC based on the Skylake architecture and has been launched in September 2015. The CPU can be found in ultrabooks as well as normal notebooks.. In addition to two CPU cores with Hyper-Threading clocked at 1.8 - 2.9 GHz (2 cores: max. 2.7 GHz), the chip also integrates an Iris Graphics 540 GPU with 64 MB of dedicated eDRAM memory and a dual-channel DDR4-2133/DDR3L-1600 memory controller. The SoC is manufactured using a 14 nm process with FinFET transistors.

Architecture

Skylake replaces both Haswell and Broadwell and brings the same microarchitecture in every TDP class from 4.5 to 45 W. The extensive improvements of the Skylake design include increased out-of-order buffers, optimized prefetching and branch prediction as well as additional performance gains through Hyper-Threading. Overall, however, performance per clock has been increased by only 5 to 10 percent (compared to Haswell) respectively under 5 percent (compard to Broadwell), which is quite modest for a new architecture ("Tock").

Furthermore, the organisation of the eDRAM cache has been modified. Instead of acting like a victim cache, which has to be adressed via the L3/LLC, the eDRAM can now be adressed directly by programms just like the main memory. The size is still 128 MB for the quad-core models (4C + GT4e), while the dual-core chips (2C + GT3e) only offer 64 MB.

Performance

According to the specified clock rates and the improved architecture, the Core i5-6260U should perform similar to the former Core i7-5500U/5550U (Broadwell, 15 W). Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as more demanding applications and multitasking.

Graphics

The integrated graphics unit called Iris Graphics 540 represents the "GT3e" version of the Skylake GPU (Intel Gen. 9). The 48 Execution Units, also called EUs, are clocked at 300 - 950 MHz and offer (thanks to the fast eDRAM cache) a performance sligthly above a dedicated GeForce 920M. Games of 2015 can thus be played smoothly in low or medium settings. For more information about performance and features, check our page for the Iris Graphics 540.

Power Consumption

Specified at a TDP of 15 W (including CPU, GPU and memory controller), the CPU is best suited for small notebooks and ultrabooks (11-inches and above). Optionally, the TDP can be lowered to 9.5 watts (cTDP down), reducing both heat dissipation and performance and allowing even more compact designs.

AMD A6 Pro-7050B

► remove from comparison AMD A6 Pro-7050B

The AMD A6 Pro-7050B is a power efficient ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) dual-core processor based on the Kaveri architecture. It was revealed in June 2014 for notebooks and is manufactured by GlobalFoundries using a 28 nm SHP process. In addition to having one CPU module for a total of two integer cores clocked at 2.2 - 3.0 GHz, the AMD chip also integrates a Radeon R4 GPU clocked at up to 533 MHz with 192 GCN shaders and a dual-channel DDR3-1600 memory controller.

Technically, the 7050B is almost identical with the consumer model A6-7000. However, AMD guarantees an especially high stability and durability for the business-oriented Pro-Series.

Architecture

Kaveri is the successor to the 2013 Richland architecture (e.g. A10-5750M). The revised CPU cores, codenamed Steamroller, represent the third generation of the module-based Bulldozer design. A number of major changes include modified decoders (now one per integer core), optimized branch prediction, and increased L1 I-cache from 64 KB to 96 KB per module. These revisions boost the performance per clock slightly over a similarly clocked Richland APU. For more details about the AMD Kaveri architecture, see our detailed analysis here:

Analysis of the AMD Kaveri Notebook Platform

Performance

The A6 Pro-7050B offers a relatively low CPU performance somewhere between an Intel Atom Z3735G and Pentium 977. Overall, the 7050B is sufficient for simple everyday workloads (Office, light browsing, multimedia), but will struggle in more demanding applications or multitasking.

Graphics

The Radeon R4 (Kaveri) GPU of the A6 Pro-7050B features a core clock of up to 533 MHz and 192 shader units. Since the GPU is based on AMD's GCN 1.1 architecture, both DirectX 11.2 "Tier 2" and Mantle are supported. Furthermore, the GPU can be used for general purpose computing in various applications, such as Adobe Photoshop via the OpenCL API.

In terms of 3D performance, the GPU is roughly as fast as the Intel HD Graphics (Haswell) or HD Graphics 4000. Limited by the CPU performance, however, only a few older and less demanding games such as Trackmania will run fluently in (very) low settings.

Power Consumption

The power consumption of the entire APU is rated at 17 Watts, which is somewhat above the Haswell ULV CPUs from Intel (15 W including chipset). Nevertheless, the A6 Pro-7050B is suited for 12 - 13-inch notebooks or larger.

Intel Core i5-6198DU

► remove from comparison Intel 6198DU

The Intel Core i5-6198DU is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core SoC based on the Skylake architecture and has been launched in September 2015. The CPU can be found in ultrabooks as well as normal notebooks. In addition to two CPU cores with Hyper-Threading clocked at 2.3 - 2.8 GHz (2 cores: max. 2.7 GHz), the chip also integrates an HD Graphics 510 GPU and a dual-channel DDR4-2133/DDR3L-1600 memory controller. The SoC is manufactured using a 14 nm process with FinFET transistors. Compared to the similar Core i5-6200U, the i5-6198DU offers a slower GPU (HD Graphics 510 versus 520).

CPU Performance

According to the specified clock rates and the improved architecture, the Core i5-6198DU should perform just slightly below the former Core i7-5500U (Broadwell, 15 W) and is similar fast as the Core i5-6200U. Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as more demanding applications and multitasking.

Graphics

The integrated graphics unit called HD Graphics 510 represents the "GT1" version of the Skylake GPU (Intel Gen. 9). The 12 Execution Units, also called EUs, are clocked at 300 - 1000 MHz. The HD 520 in the 6200U for comparison features 24 EUs.

Power Consumption

Specified at a TDP of 15 W (including CPU, GPU and memory controller), the CPU is best suited for small notebooks and ultrabooks (11-inches and above). Optionally, the TDP can be lowered to 7.5 watts (cTDP down, 800 MHz clock speed), reducing both heat dissipation and performance and allowing even more compact designs. Furthermore, there is the option to increase the TDP to 25 W (cTDP up, 2.4 GHz).
