5-star Tesla Model 3 safety features tested to the extreme as driver escapes horror crash
Images of a totaled Tesla Model 3 have been shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the Ontario Provincial Police Highway Safety Division along with a statement that the driver of the vehicle had been taken to hospital and also arrested for impaired driving (driving under the influence). The photos, which are posted below, show the complete destruction of the red Tesla Model 3 with the front crumple zone seemingly having done its job in regard to offering driver protection.
Apparently, the Tesla Model 3 initially crashed into the concrete barriers before being struck from behind by a large transport truck, which as can be seen in the relevant image ended up off the highway while also being seriously damaged. Comments on the post include one stating “Tesla is the reason the driver is alive” while another proclaimed “The guy’s still alive because he was in a Tesla. Any other car and that kind of impact would have crushed him.” It wasn't reported if Autopilot was in use at the time.
Tesla called the Tesla Model 3 the “safest car ever built” and used its 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as part of the car’s promotion back in 2018. The statement “the lowest probability of injury of any vehicle ever tested by NHTSA” that was used by Tesla was considered controversial by federal agencies as it was seen as being potentially misleading and even inaccurate.
Despite this, it’s clear to see that this particular Tesla Model 3 has protected the driver successfully, even though it is left in pieces. The Tesla Model 3 has been designed to reduce the chance of a dangerous rollover in a crash, with the placement of the battery and motors being close to the ground, giving the vehicle a low center of gravity. In addition, energy created during an impact is diverted away from the passenger cabin while airbags are deployed for extra protection.
