Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8926 vs Rockchip RK3288 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064A

Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8926

► remove from comparison Qualcomm 400 MSM8926

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8926 is an entry-level ARM-SoC for Android smartphones and tablets. It offers four Cortex-A7 cores clocked at up to 1.2 GHz (Quad-Core) as well as an Adreno 305 graphics card at 450 MHz. Furthermore, a HSPA+/LTE radio is integrated in the SoC, which is manufactured in a 28-nanometer LP process.

Rockchip RK3288

► remove from comparison RK3288

The Rockchip RK3288 is a mid-range ARM SoC for Android and Chrome OS mobile systems. It integrates four Cortex-A12 cores clocked at up to 1.8 GHz. ARM calls these cores Cortex-A17 due to them having very similar performance levels. The SoC includes an ARM Mali-T760 MP4 (also called Mali-T764) GPU clocked at 600 MHz and a dual-channel DDR3, DDR3L, LPDDR2, LPDDR3 memory controller.

The ARM Cortex-A12 is the successor to the Cortex-A9 and is based on a 32 Bit ARMv7-A microarchitecture. A single A12 core should be roughly 40 % more powerful than an A9 core according to ARM.

The integrated video engine supports encoding of H.264, VP8, and MVC videos up to 1080p. Decoding is supported for videos up to 4K H.264 and 10 Bit H.265.

The chip is manufactured under a 28 nm HKMG process.

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064A

► remove from comparison Qualcomm S4 Pro APQ8064A

The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064A is a high-end SoC for Android smartphones and tablets, which was introduced in 2012. The chip integrates 4 CPU cores, which are based on the ARMv7-compatible, but by Qualcomm designed Krait architecture. This provides a much higher per-MHz performance than Cortex-A9 chips such as Nvidia's Tegra 3 or the Exynos 4412 from Samsung, but does not quite reach the performance of the Cortex-A15 (for example in the Tegra 4). The memory is accessed via 2 x 32 bit LPDDR2 at up to 533 MHz, which offers a bandwidth of 8.5 GB/s.

The APQ8064A integrates an Adreno 320 GPU by IMG, which clocks at 400 MHz and offers a performance of over 50 GFLOPS. Thus, the graphics unit is one of the fastest in the SoC market (early 2013) and is only surpassed by a few models such as the PowerVR SGX554MP4 in the iPad 4. Therefore, even the most demanding 3D games in high resolutions will run fluently (Sony Xperia Z with 1080p display).

Thanks to a dedicated decoder, the SoC can accelerate 1080p video playback up to a frame rate of 30 fps. 3D photos are possible up to a resolution of 20 megapixels. In addition, the chip also integrates a wireless module with Bluetooth 4.0 and WLAN 802.11ac/a/b/g/n. Produced by TSMC in 28 nm (LP), the power consumption should be around 4 watts (estimated, depending on the clock speed).
