4 deeply discounted racing games on Steam to take driving skills to a new level
1. DiRT Rally 2.0
If you're a fan of the DiRT games of old, DiRT Rally 2.0 might appeal to you. It's less of an all-out arcade racing game and much more of a serious racing sim — letting your car get beat up will cost you performance, and even the tiniest mistakes can cost you the race. DiRT Rally 2.0 aims for the hardcore rally sim crowd that doesn't care about flashy cars or a raucous soundtrack (though it has both of those in spades). Instead, Codemasters hopes you'll plug in a racing wheel, slap on a VR headset, and get down to business.
DiRT Rally 2.0 can be had on Steam for just US$4.99 — a 75% discount — until 2 November, 2022.
2. DiRT 5
DiRT 5 is like DiRT Rally 2.0's uncivilised cousin — instead of a hardcore rally simulator, DiRT 5 is pure arcade carnage. Slide, launch, crash, and race your way around some of the most scenic raceways in classic arcade fashion. As a bonus, DiRT 5 looks great and runs well, even on somewhat modest hardware. It even features excellent split-screen multiplayer, for those of you who still do couch co-op, and Codemasters even lets you play the career mode in co-op mode, meaning there's more to co-op than meaningless arcade races. Be warned that vehicle customisation is limited to cosmetics, though, so if you're after in-depth performance tuning, perhaps Need for Speed is a better place to look.
Steam is selling DiRT 5 for US$17.99, discounted 70%, until 1 November, 2022.
Playing racing games with a controller is great, but a proper driving sim setup takes it to the next level. The Logitech G920 Driving Force Racing Wheel + Logitech G Driving Force Shifter Bundle is an excellent choice and is available on Amazon.
If you're looking for a true blast from the past, PalmRide is an excellent place to start. PalmRide is not like most of the other racing games you'll find on Steam. Instead of bleeding-edge graphics and adrenaline-pumping action, PalmRide asks you to sit back, relax, and enjoy a ride through a retro, synthwave world filled to the brim with neon and charm. Don't let the laid-back vibes fool you, though, there's still plenty of fast-paced gaming to be had, PalmRide just doesn't take itself nearly as seriously as the likes of Need for Speed or DiRT Rally 2.0.
PalmRide is US$1.99, 50% off the regular price, on Steam until 31 October, 2022.
4. Need for Speed Payback - Deluxe Edition
Need for Speed Payback doesn't break the traditional Need for Speed mould too much, and that's a good thing. There's a veritable smorgasbord of vehicles, heavy performance and visual customisation, and a shallow revenge plot that you won't care about when you're racing around Fortune Valley's open world. While customisation has copied the trading card genre's homework a little, where random number generators are used to grant players the ability to upgrade the vehicles, the sheer variety and flexibility of the customisation system makes up for its flaws.
You can grab Need for Speed Payback - Deluxe Edition on Steam for US$8.99 — another 70% discount — until 1 November, 2022.
