Deal | 16-core AMD Ryzen 9-powered ROG gaming laptop gathers $600 discount

Thanks to an ongoing sale on Walmart, the powerful Asus ROG Strix G16 gaming laptop is now available with a massive $600 discount, bringing its price down to just under $1,400.

This variant of the G16 gaming laptop comes equipped with an extremely powerful 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX CPU paired with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM, as well as an RTX 5060 Laptop GPU with 8 GB of GDDR7 VRAM.

Asus G16: 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 CPU eats through intensive CPU workloads

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX "Fire Range" CPU is an absolute benchmark champion, consisting solely of full-fat Zen 5 cores. In synthetic tests, the CPU easily keeps up with the Core Ultra 9 285HX from Team Blue. Apple's M4 Max does manage a slight advantage in Cinebench 2024, but not by a whole lot.

In simpler terms, the gaming laptop CPU performance is very admirable, and the G16's chassis does a decent job at maintaining performance over multiple runs, as stated by UltrabookReview's review. The vast majority of intensive multi-threaded workloads should not pose any threats whatsoever - when plugged in, of course.

The 115-watt GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop GPU comes only with a paltry 8 GB of VRAM, which might not prove to be sufficient 2 or 3 years down the road, unlike the properly high-end CPU. Still, 1080p gaming at high frame rates should be easily possible, but there is no doubt that this specific variant is geared more towards those with more CPU-intensive workloads.

The G16 gaming laptop's 165 Hz IPS display features 100% coverage of the sRGB color gamut and sports a resolution of 1920 by 1200. The panel should be perfectly serviceable for fast-paced gaming, but it is clearly nothing quite worth writing home about.

The I/O on offer is good enough and has been detailed below:

• 1G Ethernet
• Dual USB 4.0 Type-C ports, one with PD
• Dual USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports
• 3.5 mm audio
• HDMI 2.1

Dual SODIMM slots are present, only one of which comes populated with a 16 GB DDR5-5600 stick (Corsair Vengeance currently $229 on Amazon). The 1 TB SSD can also be upgraded, courtesy of dual M.2 slots. At its current price on Walmart, the Asus ROG Strix G16 gaming laptop is a decent choice for folks with heavy CPU-intensive workloads.
