Western Digital has unveiled the WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD, a high-performance storage solution for PCs. Offering read speeds of 7,200 MB/s (compared to the 7,300 MB/s provided by 1-4TB options), the drive is being marketed as "built for elite gaming". The SSD will likely provide reduced load times and smoother gameplay, among other perks.
Built upon Western Digital's TLC 3D NAND technology, the SN850X supports PCIe Gen4 x4 interface for lightning-fast data transfer speeds and is compatible with both Windows PCs and PlayStation 5 (heatsink model required). To maintain optimal performance under heavy loads, the optional heatsink is available for an extra $50.
Beyond speed and capacity, the SSD incorporates features like Predictive Loading, Overhead Balancing, and Adaptive Thermal Management. Predictive Loading anticipates user behavior to prioritize data loading, Overhead Balancing optimizes performance by managing background tasks, and Adaptive Thermal Management regulates temperature to sustain peak performance. Additionally, the SN850X supports Microsoft DirectStorage to further optimize load times. The accompanying WD_BLACK Dashboard software provides users with drive health monitoring, RGB lighting customization, and Game Mode 2.0 features for performance boosts.
The WD_BLACK SN850X 8TB variant will be available for $899 with the heatsink ($849 without). In the market, it will be a strong contender against other high-speed/high-storage solutions such as Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus 8TB (which has a $1000+ price tag).
