As reported earlier, SEGA had scheduled a VF Direct 2025 Spring and hinted towards big announcements for the Virtua Fighter series - and the developer delivered on that promise.
SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have officially teased a brand-new Virtua Fighter game, which marks a bold new direction for the popular fighting franchise. While the title and release date remain are not yet revealed, the upcoming entry will emphasise narrative and character development, which is quite a shift from the series’ traditionally gameplay-focused roots.
Another highlight of the Virtua Fighter Direct 2025 Spring presentation was the reveal of veteran fighter Wolf Hawkfield, with a complete, rugged redesign that ditches his signature ponytail for a beard. The redesigned Wolf reflects the studio’s intention to modernise legacy characters and add emotional depth. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series, is leveraging its narrative strengths to flesh out character arcs and motivations, which is something Virtua Fighter has never really done.
The teaser also hinted at other returning characters and an overarching plot, with subtle hints to timeline progression and potential faction rivalries. It looks like SEGA is taking inspiration from wrestling storytelling traditions and classic arcade lore to reignite interest in the franchise.
Further, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., which launched on Steam in January 2025, is now coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2. This enhanced port will support cross-play and rollback netcode, addressing long-standing fan requests. Plus, SEGA promised more content in future updates in the Virtua Fighter series.
